So you have chosen to plant a flower garden. Where do you start? You can start by walking around the outside area of your house. Look at different areas and choose a couple where you might consider planting a garden. Make sure this area gets enough sunlight, a good water source and can I put the size of garden I want here.

Once you have chosen the area you want to make into you flower garden, take some marking paint or a hose and mark out where you would put it. Take the time to try some different options with your garden. Look at different sizes and shapes and consider what you are going to be adding to it.

Now that you know right where you are going to put your flower bed and the size you are going to have it, you need to clean the area up. If it has grass, you need to remove the grass. You can either do that bad pulling the grass up or you can use a grass/weed killer and kill the grass. Pulling the grass up can take some time and hard work, but is your quickest way to start your garden. Once you pull the grass up, be sure to clean the area up as much as you can and mulch the soil up so you have a good soil to start with.

You may have to add some soil to your existing soil. If you choose to use grass/weed killer it may take a couple of months or up to a year to be able to plant your flower garden. The reason for this is because most grass/weed killers have product in them that stays in the soil over a period of time to kill whatever comes in contact with it. Make sure you read the label before planting anything. Also be careful with children and animals around grass/weed killer, it can be harmful to them if touched or swallowed.

When you get the area cleared up, you are ready to start planting. Before you plant, look to see if you want to add a border around your flower bed. There are many different options and looks you can add to make your garden look unique and different. Now that you are ready to plant, you need to select your flowers and plants you want to plant. Some flowers and plants you can start as seeds or you can buy them at a local nursery already blooming.

When you get your flowers and plants home, leave them in their pots and set them in the areas you think you will be planting them. You might already know exactly where you want them, but you may surprise yourself and find a different area you want to put them. Once you have selected where you want them to grow, dig a hole that is bigger width and depth of your plant. Add a little water in the hole and add your plant. Some people like to "rough" up the roots of their plant to help them grow a little faster. Most of your plants will come with directions on the space and width you should plant them. Following these instructions will help your flowers and plants to grow better.

Now that you have your flowers and plants planted, you may need to add some extra soil or mulch. Adding mulch to you garden will help retain water and will help you flowers and plants be able to use that water through hot periods in the summer. Watch for insects in your flower beds. If you find some, there are many insect sprays that you can use that are not harmful for your flowers.
