Healthy lawn tips and tricks

When you create your home you want to make it representative of you. You work to make everything look great. Your lawn should be no exception. A healthy lawn is going to make your home and yard look great. The following are some tips and tricks for a healthy looking lawn:

First and foremost, timing is key to a healthy lawn. Horticultural experts agree that proper lawn care in the Fall has greater impact than similar efforts any other time of year. The reason is that Fall is the season when turfgrass growth begins to slow. At this point, you can help your grass develop the stamina it will need to survive the stress of winter.

The next tip is when to focus on your lawn. October is generally the right time to focus additional attention for cool-season grasses such as those found in the Northern U.S., while the latter part of the month is best for warm-season varieties found in the more southern locations.

The next tip for a healthy lawn is to mow your lawn during the fall. A lot of people mow all summer long, and neglect regular mowing during the Fall. Make sure that when you do mow the mower blade is sharp. A ragged cut, which is what you will get with a dull blade tends to shred the grass blade tips, exposing a larger surface area to disease, pest and water loss.

Next, do not forget to use mulching but remove thick lawn debris. If you use mulching, you can protect your lawn from freezing. However, you want to be sure to remove any that could be a problem. If you mulch leaves you can use them as a protective cover. However, if you have areas where the mulch is too thick, they could trap dampness and become a breeding spot for diseases and pests.

Aerating is the next step to a healthy lawn. This should be done a few weeks before the first frost. Your lawn has been stepped on and pounded down all year, and should be aerated to get oxygen back into the soil to refresh it. You will want to use an aerator that has hollow tins, and that pulls clumps out to let air get to the roots of the grass.

Of course, you will also want to fertilize and water. When you fertilize, be sure to follow the directions on the bag, and get even coverage across the surface of the lawn. If you over fertilize it can be like poison to your lawn. Also, be sure to water just enough, not too much. Too much water can effectively drown your lawn.

With all of these things, you will want to focus on the sequence of how they are performed. So, make sure you do them in order, as this will make for a healthier lawn. Make sure you do them at the right time of the year as well. You can aerate at any time during the year, but doing it a few weeks before the first frost is the best time of year to do it.

Follow the above tips and tricks for a healthier, more beautiful lawn. With the right care your lawn will be stronger, come in thicker and greener.
