How do I find out about home school curriculum options?

As a parent who is thinking about the idea of starting your student into a home school program you may be asking yourself, "What home school curriculum options are available and how do I find out about them?"

There are many overall benefits to home schooling, however the start up of the process and curriculum can prove to be somewhat intimidating.

The benefits that you and your child will be receiving is the closeness you will share, the one on one time that you can give in order to makes sure the information being taught is clear, and the ability to filter, so that the curriculum taught is what you want.

However a few things dictate part of the curriculum you will need to provide to your student.

The State and Federal government requires certain regulations to be upheld where the education of the community is involved. To start with, you will want to contact your local school board. So, while you may have options, all have a minimum standard about what must be taught, with expansions from there.

  • Are the credits from the program able to be accredited, or in other words, will your child get equivalent school credit for taking this course?
  • What type of curriculum are they offering? Is it what you want?
  • Is there a cost to use their curriculum?
  • What support options are available, online, telephone, etc?
  • What options are available for accurate record keeping?
  • With the many options available for home school curriculums, it will take a little work from you to find what is best suited for your family. You want to look for not only quantity in the curriculum but also quality.

The education you are providing for your student is very important for their overall success for their lifetime.

Your child's education stretches far beyond the basics of math and science. There are curriculums available that include, interactive CDs, comprehensive phonics, math problem generators, reading books, grammar games, all this with proven teaching methods to help you and your child achieve success.

There are many resources available to help you sort through all the various materials available for home schooling. Libraries and bookstores often carry a wide variety of experience proven curriculum ideas that will make planning your curriculum simpler.

There are also local groups that you can find in your area that offer support on curriculum and teaching plans for your student. There are many conventions, trainings and online groups through the Internet, which can also be very helpful.

These groups with prove helpful with making sure you understand and comply correctly with the home school laws required in your area.

Which ever the program and curriculum you choose for your student, here are a few little tips to help your success come along easier.

  1. Watch the habits of your family. Home school is a time-required activity that you and your student with have to designate certain times for study.
  2. Maintain other extra curricular activities in order to produce a well-rounded student. This would be like, church programs, clubs, scouts, sports, museums, outings etc.
  3. Use happiness and creativity when getting the training, methods and education across. It is proven that people will learn more when they are interested in a subject.
  4. Obtain a library card. This will make learning more exciting and provides a great outing idea.
  5. With subjects you are unfamiliar with, do not be afraid to learn yourself. There are many tutors, self-teaching and seminars available to help learn what you will be teaching your children in your curriculum.
