There are many quality cheap long distance plans available that can save you money. There are over 1,200 companies providing long distance in the United States. This means that to decide on one company will take a little research on your part. Not all companies offer services in all areas. In order to find out which companies are available and what ones you might be interested in subscribing to, you must first look to a few sources. One option is to go online to a long distance telephone comparison website to compare all companies and then look in your area to find if they are available. A simpler way to do it though is to first look in your phone book or on the internet. Look under telephone or phone service, note which companies service your area and then take that information to the internet to do your comparisons. This way you will be able to see how wide your selection of phone service carriers is to identify the best long distance rate available.

Long distance telephone plans are available most everywhere in the world. There are some places however where this is not an option. In these cases you will be forced to either pay excessive rates per call or purchase pre-paid long distance phone cards that will automatically be deducted per minute of use. In fact, if you don't have a long distance carrier and make a long distance call, you will be charged rates that can go as high as $.80 per minute.

Some of the better known companies out there are Sprint, AT&T and MCI World Com. These are the ones you often hear about because of their extensive marketing campaigns. There are also many smaller discount carriers. These buy long distance wholesale from the large carriers. They provide their own customer service, billing and account maintenance. They don't advertise as extensively as the large carriers and in this way they are able to keep their own costs low. These companies can oftentimes offer cheaper long distance plans in comparison to large companies.

The question then arises whether or not there is a difference between long distance companies. The answer is no. There is no difference in the quality of your long distance connection. All long distance companies, including AT&T, Sprint and World Com use the same fiber optic networks to transport their calls. The differences are found in the billing and customer service of each carrier. Therefore, knowing that you are receiving the same quality connection, the choice then becomes what company will offer you the best service. This is where you will have to do your research.

If long distance carriers are available in your area, you will definitely want to open an account if you are going to do much calling long distance. Know yourself, your calling patterns, and who and where you call the most. You will want to keep in mind whether the majority of your calls are in-state or out-of-state and whether you place your calls in the days, evenings, nights and/or weekends. In shopping, ask yourself a few questions. All of these will help you determine what kind of plan you will want. Keep in mind that all companies have different policies, plans and approach their customers differently. Some things that you will want to find out when looking into different companies are:

  • what your average monthly bill will be?

  • if the company has a monthly charge, monthly minimum charge or per-use charge.
