ou want to have this type of aeration. This is because if you go with the type that shoves the holes down into the ground, you can end up with soil compaction. This will not help with the positive growth in your lawn.

Aeration is necessary for the air the lawn needs. Right, it is not that it really breathes. However, a good lawn and grass does need oxygen. The roots require oxygen to grow well. The use of aeration also helps with the path of nutrients and water to get to the roots and soils better.

See aeration increases the healthy growth of the topsoils microorganisms. Those microorganisms decompose thatch in order to let the water, nutrients and oxygen move more freely. Also, if you use a fertilizer, aeration will help to get the benefits of the fertilizer to the roots of the grass.

Next you will need to choose if you are going to have a professional gardener come in and do this for you. Or, you can use the tools yourself. You can usually get them from a lawn and garden store.
The typical pattern you will see with good aeration is the removal of about a ½ inch diameter plug every 4 to 6 inches in your lawn. The size of the plug will be anywhere around 1 to 3 inches long.
