How to care for waxed wood floors

No matter what your floor is made of, you need to know how to clean it, so let's take a look at how to clean waxed wood floors:

For general waxed wood flooring care, your job is simple. You just want to be sure to have mats by all doorways to capture incoming dirt and dust. You will want to use a vacuum cleaner daily, to remove dust on the floor. Then, just pay attention, if things get spilled, clean them up immediately. If you see scuff marks, buff them out with a damp cloth.

For better cleaning, you will want to use a mild soap solution, very diluted. Waxed wood is not usually cleaned well by detergents. Detergents will remove the wax and can leave a sticky mess. So, be careful about what product you choose for cleaning your waxed wood floor.

You would not want to have waxed wood floors in bathrooms or kitchens, but if you do, try to keep them from ever having standing water on them. Water turns a waxed floor very slippery, so you do not really want to use water to clean them. You can very lightly mop over the floor, but it must dry very quickly, and will need buffing after to return it to a shine.

If you have a waxed wood floor, plan to strip the old wax and rewax it at least two times a year. This is one of the best ways to care for it.

If you have waxed wood floors, you need to have a buffing machine and a sheepskin pad, which should be kept clean by washing it. These are the two things you are going to use the most for caring for your waxed wood.

If there are problems with your waxed floors, they can usually be repaired by using a very fine steel wool pad. Doing so will remove the mark. You will then want to use a small amount of wax to even off the surface, but be aware that this will show until your next re-waxing, even if you are really careful.

If you choose to mop your waxed wood floors be sure to consider the following:
Use a very weak detergent solution. A good idea would be to use a mild dishwashing liquid well diluted with water.
Wring your mop out well so that no water drips from it, but so it is merely dampened.
Quickly wipe over the floor, do not let the mop sit on the floor in any area too long.
After going over the floor with your detergent solution, use clean water, and rinse two times more, also moving quickly.
Leave to dry and buff, if necessary. (It should dry within a few minutes, never let there be enough water for it to take hours to dry.)

Waxed wood don'ts
Do not use bleach, vinegar, ammonia, to clean your wooden floors with.

You can buy a wax-based detergent to maintain your waxed floors.

Caring for waxed wood floors is a difficult job, so if you do not want high maintenance flooring, do not install waxed wood, but solid hard woods, or sealed woods. Also, be careful with your waxed wood floor that you do not let it get spots from water, or nicks and dings in the wax. Use rugs to protect highly trafficked areas, and vacuum it regularly so that the wax does not get coated in dust.
