There are so many different styles and colors to choose from when you are choosing a carpet to fit your home. Not only do you need a carpet that will fit your lifestyle but you need one that will be able to hold up for years to come. You will need to find a carpet that will fit the colors in your room and the traffic that the room gets during the day. How to choose carpet for your home can be made easier if you have done some research on carpet types and know what you need.

It would be wise to begin with a budget of how much you want to spend on the carpet and the padding underneath your new carpet. With this in mind you can then think about how much traffic the carpet you are replacing will have. You may also want to consider how much maintenance your newer carpet will need. All these questions should be in your mind when you begin looking for your new carpet.

You will want the samples so that you can look at the different colors in the natural light of the room you are wanting to carpet. Keep those carpet samples with an index card attached for easy comparing later on. Include the price per square yard, the pad, and the installation. If the store offers other services you will need to include those prices also. These other services will include removal of the old carpet and moving the furniture out of and back into the room.

There are different properties of carpet to consider. Some of these include wool, nylon, polyester and olefin.

  • Wool carpet is the most expensive with a soft feel and a luxurious look. Wool carpets are also easy to dye for different colors. It has an excellent crush resistance-meaning it will hold its shape better. It is somewhat resistant to stains and poor resistance to sunlight fading.

  • Nylon is also easy to dye. It may come with a built in static control. Nylon carpets have excellent crush resistance and are easily cleaned. These nylon carpets can be manufactured to conceal and resist soils. It also has poor resistance to sunlight.

  • Polyester carpets are inexpensive and are best used in moderate to low traffic areas. These carpets will show some pilling. Some crushing can also be seen depending on the carpets density. Polyester carpets will resist water soluble stains and have a high sunlight resistance.

  • Olefin carpets can be used inside or outside. This is the least expensive of carpets. These carpets have a poor crush resistance and poor sunlight resistance. But they are easy to clean and have excellent stain resistance.

Tufted carpet is the most popular choice for today's consumers. Tufted carpet has three features for you to consider while looking at carpet for purchase.

  • The first feature would be the density of the carpet; this would include how tightly the carpet fiber is packed together and bound into the backing of the carpet. The more dense the carpet fibers the better the wear will be and the longer your carpet will last.

  • The second feature is the Face or pile weight this is the number of ounces of fiber in a square yard of carpet. This is more about the pile of the yarn used in the carpet.

  • Last is the pile height or the cut pile yarns or uncut loops when measured from the primary backing. Carpets have all different types of pile height.

  • There are also three general types of tufted carpet construction. These would include cut pile, loop pile, and cut and loop pile.

  • Cut pile carpet has individual standing tips in a wide range of densities. This type is great for many living areas of your home.

  • Loop pile carpet is carpet where the loops form the top of the carpet. This type of tufted carpet tends to be very durable.

  • Cut and loop pile carpet is a mixture of both. It comes in a wide range of patterns and designs. The patterns make it easier to hide dirt and stains.

There are many things to look at when choosing carpet for your home. The most important things is that you stay within your budget and get the carpet that will make you happy.
