How to choose tiles for looks and durability

Whether you are choosing tiles for floors, backsplashes, walls, or something else, it is important to choose tile for both looks and durability. You want your home to look nice, but you also do not want to have to spend a fortune replacing tiles because they are not durable enough to withstand use. The following are some tips and steps to choosing tiles for both looks and durability.

For durability always use a ceramic tile. They are fired at high heat, and can withstand both heat and wear. Depending on the glaze or finish of the tile it will withstand wear better. You can consult your home store for the best advice on durability of the tiles they have available to you.

As far as looks go, you will probably want to consider the fact that decorative tiles make any room or small space memorable, and better looking, but they can also be expensive. So, depending on what you are tiling, there are some things you can do.

When tiling a whole floor, such as an entry, or a kitchen floor, use ceramic tiles that are glazed with a matte finish so that they do not look too shiny, and choose a color and texture you like. The looks will depend entirely on your taste. However, for floor tiles, it is easy to find good looks and durability because you do not need anything too fancy because you will be walking on it.

For areas like your back splash, you will wan to choose a basic, plain tile, then use decorative tiles to add interest. These durable, practical works of art add personality and an upscale look for $5 to $50 each. So, you get both looks and durability for a fraction of the cost you would expect for something so eye catching and upscale. The hard part is choosing accent, border, mural and mosaic tiles that you love. There are so many options that narrowing it down to your favorites can be difficult. Once you do that though, follow these steps for creating a tiled space that is both attractive and durable:

  1. If you are having a hard time choosing a tile, simply imagine what colors or designs will reinforce your room's decorative theme. Because you will have thousands of options, it is important to look at the whole picture. What feel and look do you want for the room as a whole? You can choose from handmade artisan tiles which offer rich glazes, strong textures and whimsical pictorial designs, or you can simply go with the classy and classic mass-produced tiles, which cost less.
  2. Mix your mass-produced (also called field) tiles and accent tiles for a striking and less-expensive effect. Before grouting and putting them in, lay them out and determine if you like the look once it is actually down. Then, play with it some and determine if there is a different pattern or design you might like better.
  3. Next you will want to strategically place your designer tiles. You will want to use border tiles to emphasize a horizontal plane, frame a mirror or window, define where different surfaces meet or cap an area of related field tiles. The effect can be stunning, and yet maintain function and durability.

When it comes to choosing tiles for looks and durability you want to look for the following:

  • Color and design, sometimes simply using a different color of the same tile randomly can add great effect.

  • Artisan or handmade options, while these are more expensive, they are also a great way to improve the looks of your tile, and still maintain the durability you get with the mass produced tiles.

  • Function plus decoration, make sure the artisan or handmade tiles you choose are still durable.

  • Easy installation, this will save you time and money
