How to determine what sofa size best fits your space
When decorating your home you have a lot of variable to consider. You want to design your room to fit a certain style, but you understand the need for a functional living space. If you have children or pets you also may be looking for furniture that is going to be able to take some abuse and still look good. Size is a huge issue, even if you are able to find the perfect sofa; it may be too large or too small for the space that you are in.
Furniture that is oversized or disproportionately large compared to the space makes a room look smaller and cramped. Furniture that is small does make the room look and feel larger, but obviously at the cost of having less room to sit down. The very first thing that you need to do before you go our sofa shopping is to take measurements of the room that you are intending to furnish. This is going to limit your choices somewhat. You only have so much space in the room and with the typical sofa going against a wall, you know how long or short it will have to be by measuring the length of the wall. If you intend on putting a sofa in the middle of the room, you have better have a room large enough to handle that arrangement. After all you do not want to be bumping into any furniture as you maneuver normally around the room.

Here are some different sofa options to consider as you search for the sofa that best fits your space:
Traditional sofas and sectionals - Most people choose to buy a traditional sofa as a starter sofa. Traditional sofas come in many different designs and most will fit in just about any living room space. Small sectional sofas are great way to put a lot of seating in a limited amount of space. Sectionals are great for families and those who like to have a lot of people over because of all the additional seating that they provide. Sectional sofas are traditionally found in media room styles.
Listed below are some different pieces of furniture that are perfect for the person looking for stylish seating with minimum available space:
Loveseats - These small sofas are designed to comfortably fit two people. Loveseats are typically two cushions long and have a shorter layout. Loveseats are perfect for an apartment living room, or simply a smaller spaced living room in any home. The typical loveseat is about 60 inches wide and can easily be coupled with a traditional length sofa in a larger room to add more seating. Loveseats are available with many different types of options as well. You can typically fins loveseat recliners or rockers, where these feature are less common in a traditional sofa.
Sleeper - These sofas can convert into a pull-out bed. These are perfect for apartments or socialites who have guests coming and going frequently. Sleeper sofas are popular with people who have limited living space because a sleeper sofa can serve as a sofa or loveseat during the day, and a bed to sleep on at night. Sectionals are common sofas that also include a pull-out bed.
Futon - These are also good for those who have frequent guests. Futons are designed to serve more than one purpose. They can be used as a couch during the day and fold down into a bed at night. Many futons can be partially reclined for different lounging angles. With a single large cushion, the futon cover can easily be removed and laundered.
Chairs - If you are so pressed for space that a couch is out of the question a chair can be an excellent sofa substitute. The right chair may be difficult to find as they come in so many different styles. Whatever chair you choose, keep in mind that it may be best to go with something simple. In small spaces a simple chair can offer comfort and style whithout taking up too much space.
