Gardens are wonderful additions to almost any home. The natural beauty of well kept plants can improve the feeling of a house in amazing and unexpected ways. People notice nice gardens and wonder about the people who live in the houses adjoining them. Gardening is also an enjoyable activity because it allows you to participate in one of life's most marvelous rituals, namely the production of new life. Every plant you help to cultivate will be unique, and it will be your own. You can look with pride at a beautiful hedge or flower garden, knowing that you helped produce a thing of such remarkable beauty. As any of us who have gardened know, gardening requires allot of work, and partly because gardens have various parts. Some gardens have grass, followed by flower beds, while others may have rocks intermixed with desert plants. All gardens are different, but some require special care. Any garden that has grass and then fixed bed areas needs to be well edged or it will start to look sloppy and will loose its natural shape. You have probably seen gardens like this; the grass does not seem to have any particular shape besides that of a blob, and the grass is also growing into the rest of the yard. There seems to be no barrier between the grass and the rest of the yard, producing a sloppy and ugly appearance. A garden like this needs a good edging.

So how do you edge your garden? It is not as hard as you might think. Edging is generally a very easy process, but it can take some time and effort. To begin edging you should figure out the shape of your grass or bed areas. You might even want to use some string or some sort of marker to mark the exact edge you want your grass to follow. You will need to then cut the grass in the shape you want. Before you start to dig in your yard, make sure that you call the local utility company to find out where any buried lines might be.

Once you have checked for buried lines purchase an edger. There are gas powered versions of these that can be used to edge along concrete, but if you just want something to cut out a shape in your grass you might want to consider getting a manual edging shovel. Once you have cut, purchase the edging material. You should by a four inch deep piece of either steel, plastic, or aluminum. You will want to set the edging a half inch above the ground so that the grass cannot grow through into your beds. Make sure that the edge of the edging is not too sharp. If it is, you will need to file the edge so that it is rounded off. Otherwise it could cut your feet.

There are other forms of edging as well, such as stone walls and pavers. These can be very attractive and can provide an attractive alternative to the steel or plastic edging. You simply have to choose what type of edging you want. Stone is attractive but it is much more visible, whereas steel edging is almost invisible and also very sleek.

Wherever you live you can do your own edging with much ease. Before you start edging you should always consult a professional and get their advice. You do not know what will look best and what type of edging might be best in your particular part of the world.
