How to get greener grass and spend less watering

Everyone likes a green lawn but with water resources running low you don't want to pay the extra to get the nice green lawn. There are ways to save on your watering bill instead of letting your grass die. We'll take a look at how to get a greener grass and spend less watering.

First you should get the right grass seed. Start with some research on what types of grass are best for your climate. The three main things you need to know about your climate is how cold are the winters, how much it rains and your type of soil. Knowing these will help you choose a grass seed that will be easier to maintain. Grass that is made for your climate will not require as much watering as a grass that is not. You will get a green lawn and spend less watering.

It is best to water in the early morning but if that is not possible try to water when it is not windy and the leaves of other plants have time to dry off before nightfall. This will help ward off diseases and pests. You should not water in the middle of a hot day. Water will evaporate and less will get onto your lawn. The water should get down about 6-8 inches and the lawn should be allowed to dry some between watering to prevent run off. Set timers on your sprinklers so you don't forget to turn them off. When you water your lawn infrequently but deeper you are giving the roots a chance to grow leaving you with a greener lawn and hopefully a smaller water bill.

Another way to get a greener grass and spend less watering is to plant more flowers or natural grasses. You don't always need a lawn that reaches from the front of your sidewalk to the back of your house. Use some different types of landscaping. Plant some natural native grasses for your area. Some native grasses would include prairie grass, wheat grass, or June grass. These grasses can be easily incorporated into your flowers and they don't require much watering since they are made for your certain area. Plant flowers farther in the yard then you normally would. You should use flowers that don't require a lot of watering like pansies or mums.

Instead of planting flowers or natural grasses you could also use rock gardens. You could still have a lawn but cut back on what size. Use decorative rock on the sides or around your house. You don't have to water these rocks and it will save you time when it comes to mowing. The little part of a lawn that you do have will look very green. Adding trees and bushes also saves on the water bill while giving you a greener lawn. Trees hold onto water better and also give your lawn a nice shade to protect the grass from heat and sun.

Lawns require the most water in the summer. If you follow some simple steps you can have a greener lawn while spending less on your watering. Water infrequently but well, pay attention to your watering and look to other options for a full lawn.
