Culinary herbs- Culinary herbs are probably the most useful to herb gardeners because there is a wide range of uses for them in cooking. For example: chives, thyme, savory, marjoram, mint, and basil are all types of culinary herbs.
Aromatic herbs- Aromatic herbs have some uses and are not as popular to grow. Oils from aromatic herbs can be used to produce perfumes, and various scents. Some common aromatic herbs include mint, marjoram, lovage, rosemary, and basil.
Medicinal herbs- Some medicinal herbs are said to have great healing properties. Medicinal herbs should always be used carefully. Make sure to do the proper research before using these herbs. Some herbs are harmless while others can be dangerous if consumed.
Ornamental herbs- Ornamental herbs have brightly colored flowers and foliage. Such herbs as spotted thyme, mint, lavender, and chives produce variegated foliage.
Herbs also can be classified as annuals, biennials, and perennials. Annuals bloom one season and then die. Biennials live for two seasons, blooming the second season only. Perennials bloom each season.
Now that you know what kind of herbs you would like to plant, let's take a look at growing different herb gardens:
Growing an herb garden outside:
When selecting the site for your herb garden, make sure you have proper drainage and soil fertility. Drainage is probably the most important thing in growing a successful herb garden. If the garden area is poorly drained, you will have a hard time making your garden a success. Make sure you have good soil before planting. Good garden soil is not easy to find, and most beginning gardeners soon realize they must improve the soil. Herbs can survive in a wide variety of soil types, but by making some simple changes, your garden soil can become as easy to use and productive as you'd like.
Good soil is 50 percent solids and 50 percent porous space, which provides room for water, air, and plant roots. The solids are inorganic matter which is: fine rock particles and organic matter or decaying plant matter. Each spring, as you preparing the garden to plant, incorporate organic matter into the soil by tilling or turning it under with a shovel. If non-composted materials are used, then nitrogen we be used from the soil. To compensate for this nitrogen loss, increase the amount of nitrogen fertilizer into the soil.
Fertilizers
Properly fertilized plants will be healthier and better able to resist disease and attacks from pests and they will provide more and higher-quality herbs. There are two types of fertilizers: organic and inorganic. Both contain the same nutrients and both can be used.
Planting an herb garden inside:
Herbs can also be grown indoors for year-round enjoyment. Choose a spot that gets at least 4 hours of direct sunlight a day. Decide what herbs you want to grow and think about what you want to do with your herbs. Do you want to cook with them, make potpourri or enjoy their fragrance? Buy your plants at a nursery that specializes in herbs. Use containers that are at least 8 inches deep and 6 to 8 inches across for each plant. Lay pieces of screen mesh over the containers' drainage holes and add a good quality, well-draining potting soil mixed with coarse sand and mushroom compost.
Now, set the herb plants into the soil at the same depth they were growing in their nursery pots and water them well. Be careful not to over water. Soak them once or twice a week and this will keep most herbs happy. Feed the plants once a week when they're actively growing, using seaweed extract or fish emulsion. When you are growing indoor herbs make sure to take good care of them. Clip outer leaves or sprigs as you need them, but always leave plenty of vigorous growth on the plant to ensure the plant stays healthy and strong.
