Furnaces are a very important part of modern life. People lived for thousands of years before they were invented, but we now know how much easier it is to live with these sorts of machines. Simply turning on a switch means that we have heat in our homes in the middle of winter. It used to be that people had to build a fire and collect wood for it to survive. This required tremendous amounts of time and was very difficult. In our modern lifestyle we don't have the time for this sort of thing, and it is so much easier to simply do things electronically. It is absolutely critical that we know how to use a furnace and that we know how to maintain them. Although furnaces are easy to use, this does not mean that they are simple machines. They are actually quite complicated and require some maintenance. Most people buy an appliance and then think they never need to do anything to help keep it up. This is a terrible idea because most machines require some sort of basic care. Even a few easy tasks, performed even once or twice a year can greatly prolong the life of your furnace. These sorts of routine checkups can also help to improve the energy efficency of the furnace and possibly the safety of the machine.

So how do you help your furnace to last longer? The most basic thing you need to do is to change your filter or clean it. You might not even know that you need to change or clean the filter. If you have not done it before you should definitely look into doin it as soon as possible, and especially if the winter is coming soon. The problem with dirty filters is that they can get little bits of dust or dirt into the blower and other parts. This could make your furnace less efficient, and it can definitely damage the furnace. Many experts suggest that you replace filters once a month, or that you clean a reusable filter the same amount.

Another important part of good furnace maintenance is to make sure that the outdoor intake and exhaust vents are clear. Realize that ice or snow could easily block these and produce a serious problem. One issue is that vents can be blocked, filling the furnace room, and possibly your home, with very dangerous carbon monoxide poison. Another important thing to think about is an annual tune-up. This can greatly reduce the possibility of carbon monoxide poisoning, and it can also help to improve the efficiency of the furnace.

Following these basic steps will help to ensure that your furnance is working efficiently and safely. It will also greatly prolong the life of your furnace. Many people don't know that the majority of furnace calls are simply about some little thing with the furnace. They don't realize that by simply keeping the filter clean they can avoid most maintenance, which can be quite costly to do. Many people also don't realize that by performing basic maintenance they can make their furnace much more efficient. Over the long run this could save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars. As with most home care issues, a small amount of care can lead to a much better situation. There are other things that are to be considered as well. One is that carbon monoxide is a major killer. You want to keep your family safe, and one way to do that is to maintain your furnace.
