How to increase curb appeal.
Curb appeal is what people notice as soon as they look at your house, from the street. Increasing your curb appeal will heighten the appeal and improve the appearance of your home. Improving your curb appeal is important if you are staying in your house for a long time, but is especially important if you are planning on selling your house.
Tim Thoelecke is the owner of Garden Concepts, a store in Glenview, Illinois. He defines curb appeal as "the entire experience somebody has from the time they arrive in the driveway until they pass through the front door." When you are designing the curb appeal for your home, you are creating an entire experience for the viewer.

If you are trying to sell your home, your curb appeal will quite literally make or break you. No matter how spectacular your home is, if you don't have great curb appeal, nobody is even going to come knock on your front door. Your curb appeal is what potential buyers judge your entire home on. So for all homeowners, here are some great tips to help you improve your curb appeal and increase the value and the appearance of your home.
1. Decide on an overarching concept.
Experts say that when you are deciding what to do about your curb appeal, the first thing that you need to do is go outside. Walk down the street, far enough that you can still see the entire front of your house. Now look carefully at the entire house and the yard. Where does your eye go first? For most houses, the eye should be drawn to the front door of the house. If the eye is drawn to some scrubby, overgrown bushes on the side of the house instead, you know that you've got a problem.
Decide what you want your home's message to be. Do you want a modern look? A timeless look? A country look? And where do you want the eye to go? Having a plan means that even if you work on different parts of your yard and home at different times, you will still be consistent throughout the entire improvement process.
2. Check out your front door.
Is your front door easy to find? Is the eye drawn to the front door? Most people choose the front door as the focal point for their curb appeal. Here are some tips for upgrading your front door:
Paint your door a bright color.
Build a curving pathway, whether stone, concrete, or wood, that goes to your front door.
Buy some nice plants and some beautiful large pots or planters to group around your front door.
If you have a large porch, consider a swing. Be careful of clutter, though.
Buy a large welcome mat.
3. What about the driveway?
The majority of new homes have the driveway and the garage as the main focal point of their entire frontal image. But is the driveway really the most attractive part of your landscaping? Hopefully it is not. Here are some ways that you can take attention away from the driveway, and increase the appeal of your driveway.
Stain the driveway to the color of stone.
Consider a brush-on coating.
Paint the driveway with a pigmented sealer.
Consider using large gravel for your driveway instead of concrete.
Think about actually bricking your driveway. If that's out of your budget, try a coat of brick-design concrete.
4. Think carefully about the details.
Curb appeal depends on all of the different elements of your home and yard. This means that simply pulling out the edger for your lawn can help transform your yard from so-so to pretty impressive. Think about carrying a color scheme from your flowers into the exterior details of the house and also into your walk way through the use of tiles, pots, and planters.
Keep your flower beds tidy and keep your lawn mowed. Pull out dead plants. Prune your trees. These are all great ways to increase your curb appeal.
