How to keep windows clean, sealed, and secure

window39202003.jpgKeeping your windows clean is important. They need to be kept clean to have a clean home but also need to be kept secure and sealed so that they don't break or so someone can't break in. Here are some tips for keeping your windows clean, sealed, and secure.

To keep your windows clean, vacuum them. Go around the window and also wash any drapes or curtains that are around the windows. Then, go over the window sill and the edges of the windows with a damp cloth. You can use some soap too but only use the gentle kind. If you use the kind that is really harsh, you will ruin the finish on the frame and window. Types that are gentle include Ivory or Dove. Get rid of all the dirt and dust. Rinse it off thoroughly so that you don't leave any soap behind. Dry it well so that you don't leave the water to ruin the wood or finish of the frame. Don't forget to wash the actual window too. Use newspaper and a window cleaner. The newspaper will help it to be streak free when you are done.

If you have any cracks in the windows, buy some caulk and seal it up. If you have special windows, buy the product that will work best to seal up the windows. Leaving windows unsealed or with cracks in it will help to bring in bugs. It can also let out heat during the winter and cold air conditioning during the summer. Keeping your windows sealed helps to save you money so check them every year when you are spring cleaning. You will be checking and cleaning everything else, so it's a great time to check and fix the windows too.

If you are going to weatherstrip your windows, make sure that you know what you are doing. Weatherstripping is important but you can hurt yourself or ruin the window if you aren't careful. If you want it done but aren't sure how to do it, hire a professional. They will do a great job and you won't have to worry about ruining anything.

Keep your windows secure. If they aren't in correctly, they will fall out, creating a big problem. If you are getting new windows, just have the professionals install them. If they make a mistake they will pay for it and will have to repair it if they did it wrong.

If your windows get cracked, repair them immediately. You can't always get a guy to come out with a new window the same day, so try this. Put duct tape around the broken part. Put a plastic covering, a bag or sheet if it's that big, on the inside and duct tape it in the window. It will help to keep it covered and keep out any rain. Put duct tape across the middle all over it. Use as much as you think it needs. It will help to keep it secure for a while, until you can get the new window pane.

Keep your windows clean, sealed, and secure. They are some of the most important parts of your house. Use these tips to make sure they work the way they should.
