How to know if your garden soil is good for growing plants? Growing your garden in good soil is beneficial for the overall growth and success of your garden. Good soil holds the nutrients that go into our plants. Therefore, if you have poor soil, the plants you grow will be lacking what they need to grow.

It is hard to know if your soil is truly good soil. The only real way to do this is to test the soil. You can have your soil tested in a few different ways. However the easiest way is to take a bit of it to the local nursery and have them test it. They will do it for free.

However there are some easy ways to take a guess at how good your soil is. Here is how.

  1. Look at your plants health.
  2. Check to see if your plants are thriving, or if they are lacking in color, growth, or taste (if edible).
  3. If your plants are not doing well even when you feed them, then it is a good time to check and see what type of soil you are working with.
  4. If you add a good fertilizer and food to your soil, give the soil a little time to adjust.
  5. Make sure you are giving the soil enough water; to make sure it has the change to become good soil.
If you find that the soil is not what your plants need, it is a good idea to have it tested. This is what you will find from the test.
  1. If your PH is low in the soil, then you can adjust these levels by doing one of two things. You can add a little lime. This will help to raise the alkaline levels in the soil. If the alkaline is high, then you can add a little sulfur to lower the alkaline level in the soil. However, this process should be done over time in small amounts. This is in order to make sure you do not kill the plants. If you tested your soil before you planted your garden, then it is fine to use the entire recommended amount all at once.
  2. If the nutrient level is low in the soil, you can bring these levels up in your garden also. There are both inorganic nutrients and organic nutrients that can be added to the garden. The inorganic fertilizers can add some positive tastes, and is rather less expensive. However many gardeners like to go with the complete organic fertilizer. This choice will be up to you.
  3. If the texture of your soil is a problem, then there are things you can do with this also. You will know if there is a problem if the soil is muddy, has too much clay, is sandy, or rocky. Then adding organic matter and topsoil can help with this. Organic matter can increase the overall structure of the soil. You can use peat moss, grass clippings, mulch or manure. The thing with any of these is that it is better if you mix them in the soil ahead of time, and let them sit for a week before you plant in them.

This is how to know if your garden soil is good for growing plants. This is also what you can do to fix the problems you might have in your soil. The plants you grow will tell you how the garden is going.
