How to organize your garage

garagedoors41837917.jpgSpring-cleaning doesn't just mean cleaning up your house from top to bottom; it also includes cleaning up the outdoor sheds or garages. A major part of cleaning out your garage is organizing your garage.

Here are some steps you should take to help clean and organize your garage:

Step one:
You will first need to get the motivation to go clean and organize your garage. A thought to help get you motivated is that you can usually clean and organize your garage in a day or less. Once you begin cleaning out your garage, the first thing you need to do is to pick a place to store the items that you plan on keeping. The place should be a large flat area, such as your driveway or front lawn. You will want to check your weather forecast before you pick a day so that you do not run the chance of ruining your items.

Step two:
Start as early in the day as possible, the earlier you start the sooner you will be done. If you put it off until later, you might not be able to finish because it will get dark. To help get the project done as quickly as possible you want to enlist the help of your family. As an added bonus, you will also be able to help teach your children the benefits of being organized. Sometimes having family help clean it out is a good idea because they will continue to help keep it clean because of how much work they put into cleaning it.

Step three:
Start working from the outside in. You will want to start with a corner that is the closest to the driveway and move in towards the house. If your garage is detached you will want to work from the corner closest to the driveway and work back towards the back of the garage.

Step four:
As you begin removing items from your garage, you want to do decide what you are going to do with them immediately. If you wait until later to make the decision, you might not get rid of the stuff. Chances are it ended up in the garage in the first place because you put it there until you could decide what to do with it.

Step five:
For the items you plan on keeping, you should separate them by category as soon as you move it from the garage. Putting everything into one huge pile only makes your work harder because you are going to have to go through it again when you are organizing your items. The most common groups you will have are sports equipment, gardening tools and supplies, car care products, camping gear, and tools.

Step six:
You will want to keep your trashcan nearby for any items that you plan to throw away. If the item is too large to fit inside the trashcan, place it next to the trashcan so you can take it to the landfill as soon as possible.

Step seven:
For items that you wish to sell or give away place them in separate boxes that are clearly marked. The items that you are selling should be stored in the front of your garage until your yard sale takes place, items that are being given to charity should be dropped off as soon as possible or call and arrange a time for them to pick it up.

Step eight:
Finally, you will need to add some organizing tools to store your belongings. You can use freestanding shelves, hooks, built in shelves, cupboards, tool chests, and pegboard to name a few things. What you choose is going to depend on your budget and your organizing needs. Once you get the organizing tools in place, you will need to put away everything that you are keeping in its proper location.
