Watch the spot you picked for a day. Take a good look at it every hour and see how much sun the area is getting. If there is sun less than half of the day you will pick shade plants instead of sun loving plants.
Flowers will depend on the season, so find out what flowers are growing best this time of year and create a theme. It is a great idea to draw out what you want to put in the box and where. You can mix colors, foliage, and textures to create a very eye catching piece. Don't forget about fruits, veggies, and herbs they can add so much to your box.
When you are thinking of arrangements, keep in mind the rule of thumb for window boxes is tall plants, mounding plants in the center, and plants that are going to trail in the front. This will round out the box great, but also remember that rules are made to be broken.
When picking out a box avoid the plastic ones, they are usually more trouble than not. Metal boxes will only work for one or two growing seasons and then they will be rusted out. Wood is the best way to go for your window box. Cedar wood is the most recommended for its beauty in aging.
When you get ready to plant, line the bottom of the box with rocks, landscaping fabric, or plastic, plastic being your last choice. This will help with drainage and keeping the soil in. Run some water over the bottom before putting the soil in to check the drainage.
Now find the soil that will work best for the plants you picked. Some professionals recommend that you use a "growing medium" in replace of soil. Mix with your soil some fertilizer, slow release is the best. You may also want to put in polymer water absorbers that will reserve water for less frequent watering on your part.
When you are planting the flowers you chose, it is a good idea to plant them closer together than you would in the garden. This will help make your arrangement more full and give your flowers a chance to spread up as well as out.
Everyday you need to check on your flowers to make sure they are not thirsty. Also take care of them by removing the dead buds and leaves. This will give it a chance to bloom really beautiful.
Make sure that you are fertilizing about every two weeks with a liquid fertilizer to ensure that your flowers are being well fed. This will help make your box fill out to the best it can be too.
Flowers in a window box are usually only good for one season. It is a great idea to change them out with the changing weather. Even in snowy winters you can have a beautiful garden under your window. Plants like English ivy, winterberry, inkberry, eastern white pine, and other hollies are hardy enough to withstand the winter. This will give your outdoors some color all year round!
