How to set up your garden shed to make gardening easier

Gardening can be a fun and rewarding activity. If you are not organized, and don't have very good gardening tools, then it can be a much harder job than it needs to be. One of the ways that you can get organized is to set up a shed that is easy to get to, and that is spacious enough to store and organize all your tools and garden products.

The first thing to consider is the location of your shed. Every yard is different. Some are big and some are small. There are also different kinds of gardening. But one thing is true of all these different situations, if the garden shed is not well placed in the yard, then it will make your gardening more difficult, especially if you have a big job to do. On the other hand, you also want to place the shed where it is not an eyesore. Consider the location of the shed wisely, and then get it as close to the areas where your work will take place the most often.
The next thing to consider is the size and type of shed. Are you going to purchase a kit, or build it from scratch? If you build it from scratch, what kind of exterior will the shed have? There are two main things to consider. Do you have the space for the shed in your yard if you have decided to purchase one? If you are building it from scratch, what will the dimensions of the shed be? Whatever you decide, you need to make sure that the shed will be big enough to efficiently store all your stuff. You have to compromise between the space you have available in your yard and the amount of tools and equipment you intend to store in the shed.
If you are building your shed from scratch, you can find plenty of educational resources from the library or on the internet to help you build it. Hopefully your shed has a few basics such as a concrete or metal foundation, a well framed structure, treated lumber on the bottom plate of the framing, a weather protective exterior, a roof with shingles, a single or double door that can lock, a ramp if necessary and ventilation. If you can run electrical wire to the shed, install an electric light with switch.
When you decided what size of shed to build, you took an inventory of all your gardening stuff. But now you need to figure out how to organize all your tools in the shed. Even if you built an extra large shed, if you don't organize your tools and equipment properly, you will not have as much room for all your tools as you had hoped. Hang your rake, shovel, hoe, and other tools with handles on the wall closest to the entrance. These are some of the most used tools, and should be readily accessible. On the other walls where tools will not be hanging, put plenty of shelves. Make sure the shelving is appropriate for the amount of weight the shelves will be supporting. If they will be supporting heavy items, consider buying or building floor standing shelves. If they will be supporting light objects, then you can attach the shelving braces directly to the framing of the shed. Have some drawers or some other kind of container for small tools such as hand shovels and small clippers. Get into the habit of keeping the tools into the same place so that you can find them when you need them. Use the floor to the back wall to store heavy equipment such as lawn mowers and tillers.
Keep your shed uncluttered. When you are done working, take the extra time to tidy up, keeping all their tools in the proper place.
