How to water your garden appropriately

One thing that every single plant needs is water-that's right, every plant, even a cactus. As a gardener, one of the most important skills that you must master early on in your gardening career is how to water your garden appropriately. There are a number of different ways that you can water your garden. However, first you have to look at how much water each one of your plants needs, and how much of that water nature will be able to provide.

How to water your garden appropriately
- Determine how much water each different variety of plant will need. You can determine this by looking at the seed packet or the information that came with the plant. If you are in doubt as to how much water a particular species of plant will need, talk to a specialist at a local garden center or nursery. Obviously, if you don't water your plants enough, then they will shrivel up and die. However, too much water is just as harmful to plants. Also make sure that you water deep enough-plants need to be watered all the way down to the ends of their roots.
- There are several different options that you have when it comes to watering your garden appropriately. You can use a simple watering can, you can use a garden hose with a fan nozzle or a spray attachment, you can use a basic portable lawn sprinkler, you can use drip irrigation, trickle irrigation, or a soaker hose. You can use any of these options; they all work adequately. However, if you are interested in conserving water, it may be worth investing in the special equipment necessary to use drip irrigation or trickle irrigation.
- If you have a small garden, then you can use just a basic watering can or your standard variety garden hose. If you are going to use the hose, then you need to make sure that you only water with a low pressure stream of water. Make sure that you water the base of the plant, instead of directing the water towards the leaves.
- If you need to water a larger area, then you may want to consider using an overhead sprinkler in order to water your garden. Overhead sprinklers let you choose to water different area sizes and also let you choose between a number of watering patterns. What you should know about overhead sprinklers, however, is that they are not particularly water efficient at all. If you are watering on a hot day or a windy day, you are going to lose a whole lot of water due to evaporation. You will need to move your overhead sprinkler around so that everything will get watered; you will need to overlap the areas that are watered. Overhead sprinklers can increase the chance for the development of disease, though you can cut down that chance if you water early in the morning.
- A soaker hose is a great idea for watering your garden because it is easy to use and it is inexpensive. A soaker hose is made of plastic or canvas that lets water slowly seep out of it all along the length of the hose. Soaker hoses will help you conserve water because the water is going directly into the ground, instead of being evaporated in the air. The soaker hose is also great because it is a gentle way to water.
- If you have raised bed gardens or container gardens, then you may want to consider drip or trickle watering systems, which are really ideal for raised bed or container gardens. The way that they work is by running short tubes or emitters off of a main water hose. The roots will be directly watered by the emitter, replacing all the water that is lost every day. Drip irrigation will also help keep the leaves and the fruit of your plants disease free. In addition, drip or trickle irrigation will also come with a self-flush system that will keep your watering system clean.
