tools31932381.jpgMost people spend a high amount of their time in their home. This means that the air in their home is the air they breathe most of the time. According to many statistics, Americans spend an average of 90% of their time indoors, whether that is in their home, a school a store, etc. it does not matter, it is indoors. This means that the air they are breathing the most often is indoor air. So, even though most people think about outdoor air during allergy season, everyone should be thinking about indoor air quality all year round.

Most homes have millions of allergens floating in the air, and these are breathed into the lungs. These can lead to asthma attacks, or respiratory ailments. So, do the following to reduce the allergens in your indoor air, and improve the quality of the air in your home:

1. Repair any cracks in your insulation. This helps reduce dampness in your home. Dampness breeds air pollutants. Mold is caused by damp walls. Dampness encourages pests. So, if you want to keep your indoor air clean, do all that you can to keep your home, foundation, walls, and insulation free of water, mildew, and dampness. The first, and best step you can take is to seal any cracks in your insulation. If you have moist insulation already, replace it. It is not very costly and can really help you save.

2. Use mold proof shower curtains. There are certain areas in your home that are more prone to mold and mildew, the bathroom is one of them as there is frequently moisture in your bathroom. So, do all that you can to keep the moisture, and thus the mold away. Get mold proof shower curtains. Keep your fan in working condition, and frequently clean the vent so that it is not obstructed, and dries the air faster.

3. Use allergen proof covers for bedding, etc. This will help to reduce dust mites. Dust mites are microscopic, and are quite common in bedding, mattresses, and homes. So, do what you can to rid yourself of them by keeping allergen covers on your bedding and by frequently washing your bedding.

4. Use some indoor air cleaners. There are ways to help improve your air quality, and they do not have to be expensive. You can purchase air cleaners that hook up to your air conditioning system, etc. Just be sure to choose the ones that work best for the allergens you may have reactions to.

5. Keep your home clean. Your home is going to be a breeding ground for allergens and things that cause reactions for you if you do not keep it clean. Dust regularly, mop, sanitize, and keep things neat and tidy, and your home's air quality will be far better. Do not smoke in your home.
