Insuring your home

house16222462.jpgInsurance is something that most people do not think about other than to pay for it. However, getting the right insurance when insuring your home, is one of the most important things you can do for yourself and your family. The following are some tips for insuring your home:

1. Protect inside and out: When insuring your home, do not just protect the structure, but the contents as well. Structural damage is possible, and thus it is good to plan for things like earthquake, flood, severe wind, and the like. However, what about when that flood makes your home theater and sound system go kaput? So, when insuring your home, it is a good idea to get a general idea of the value of all the things you own. What will it cost you to replace all of your belongings if say, something like toxic mold happens to get in your home and infect everything.

2. Not over or under insuring: One of the things that tends to be the biggest problem for most home owners is over and under insuring. Either the person does not get enough coverage for that they have and what they need, or they pay more than they should, getting insurance that is unnecessary, or that overlaps. So, the first step to insuring your home properly is making sure you know how much insurance you actually need. Do not let someone talk you into insurance that is not necessary, or try to offer you a better deal by under-insuring you.

3. What kind of insurance do you need: When insuring your home, you need to determine what type of insurance you need. If you own a condo, for example, your HOA dues might cover the exterior insurance, so you only need to insure from the sheetrock in. If you are renting, your landlord should insure the property and structure, and you should only have to insure your personal contents. However, what about liability? Your stuff might be protected, but are you? What if someone jumps on your trampoline, and breaks their leg? You get sued.

4. Liability: When buying insurance for your home, you want to make sure that you want to make sure that you get liability coverage. This covers things like hospital bills and law suits if someone gets hurt on your property. In addition, liability helps you rest easy at night.

5. Comprehensive: Comprehensive insurance is usually something that refers to vehicle insurance, but the same idea applies, it is for damage that occurs with things like flood, theft, etc. This way, if someone breaks into your house and steals all of your things, your insurance will pay for it to be replaced.

Insure your home as well as you can and still have an affordable insurance plan, with a deductible that does not put you in danger of not being able to reach it under normal circumstances.
