There are actually several different ways for a person to keep pests out of their garden. This article will discuss a few of the ways that a person can keep the pests out of their own garden.

Who are the pests

There is definitely more than one pest that a gardener needs to worry about. There are large pests such as deer, cats, rabbits, and raccoons who will make a person's garden their own personal pantry. Birds are also well-known pests who enjoy eating strawberries as well as other berries from the garden. Squirrels, rats, and mice will also do a lot of damage to a garden. Let's not forget the small pests who can do just as much damage despite their size. Small pests such as ants, caterpillars, cabbage worms, and spiders love to eat the plants in the garden.

How to keep pests away

Because there are so many different types of pests in the garden there are also several different methods for keeping those pests out of the garden. Depending on the type of pest, or pests, a gardener is dealing with will decide what method they should use to keep the pests away.

To keep deer away

If a gardener is having a problem with deer they should try scattering hair around their garden. The person can use human hair or animal hair, either will work. Another way to keep the deer out of the garden is by putting lights around the garden. A gardener can use partly lights that normally adorn their porch or even Christmas lights work.

Keeping the raccoons and rabbits away

Among other things, raccoons love to eat corn. To keep the raccoons away from the corn in the garden, a person should plant squash around the corn plants. Raccoons do not like squash and will stay away from the corn plants. To keep rabbits out of the garden, a person can dust their plants with talcum powder.

Keeping out the birds

To keep the birds out of their garden a person should make a scarecrow. Making a scarecrow is easy to do. It does not need to be fancy. A person could even take several plastic grocery bags and fill them with air. After filling the bags with air the person should tie the bags closed with a rubber band. These bags fill with air can be hung all round the garden on stakes and the rustling sound they make when the wind blows will scare the birds away.

To keep out cats and rodents

To keep out cats and rodents a person should distribute moth balls around their garden. Many cats like to use gardens as litter boxes. If a person scatters coffee grounds and orange peels around their garden they will stop the cats from using it as a litter box.

Keeping out the small pests

To keep the small pests out of the garden there are many different options. If a person is having problems with spider mites, aphids, and other small pests they can mix four tablespoons of dish soap with one gallon of water and spray it on the plants. To keep out caterpillars, cabbage worms, ants, and spiders a person can make a mixture of water and cayenne peppers and mix it in a blender.
