Keeping your grass greener longer
Keeping your grass greener longer. That lush, feeling of green grass between your toes is not like any other feeling. There is no imitating the real green grass experience. So how do you keep your grass greener longer?
There are six main things that take play in the greenness of your lawn. Those things are:
Soil PH testing
In order to make sure the Soil pH is right, you can test your soil a couple times during the year. If the soil is more alkaline, you can add a little sulfur to your mix of lawn care. If however the soil is more acidic, then you will want to use a little granular limestone.
Start with your lawn care early in the year. This will help to bring a healthier green lawn for a longer period of time. This is where fertilizer and fertilizing your lawn will come into place.
You can choose from or in a combination these different types of fertilizers. You can use mulch, good quality compost, peat moss, or other organic substances, manure etc. This will be the beginning of the lush green you are looking for. As you put this out on your lawn, you will need to sprinkle small amounts all throughout the area of grass, or where you will want the grass to grow. This is called a top dressing for your lawn.
Then you will want to aerate the lawn. Using an aerating tool, which looks like a barrel with pegs sticking out, can do this. Then as you roll the barrel the pegs dig small holes in the ground. Thus breaking up the soil.
There is another tool you can use to accomplish aerating. They are shoos that are designed to do the same thing, but usually in smaller areas. Either way you choose to aerate, you will find that it makes it easier for the water to reach the roots of the grass. Thus creating a greener lawn.
Mow regularly but keep it long
The thing about longer grass is that it will look greener. There needs to be a happy medium though, because you do not want your lawn to look unruly. A good length that many lawn care companies go with is about 2-3 inches.
Mowing in different directions will also help to create the illusion of greener grass. This is because you can use the changes in the colors to compliment each other.
Seeding your lawn throughout the year is also a good idea. This is a necessary way to replenish the seeds that need to be planted for new growth. Due to the amount of mowing we do regularly, the natural seed process is limited. So choosing a variety of seeds to be used year round will help the natural process.
After all of this, you also need to remember to water your grass. We all know it needs to be done, However if you want to keep your grass greener longer, then you will want to do a couple different types of watering.
1. Soak the grass in the spring for several hours.
2. Then water every other day lightly.
This way the water will get in and start the process of photosynthesis. The green will then reflect off of the plant. Creating the vision of lush green grass. This is what we see, and feel that creates that peace and pleasure in our minds.
