Kid friendly home

children30344134.jpgWhen you live in your home, it should be livable. Some people want their home to look beautiful, and it is not something to be ashamed of, but at what price? When you worry too much about your home being perfect, you make it some place that you can't live, and where kids can't be kids. It is never fun to have kids in a home where they can't touch anything. The following are a few tips for creating a kid friendly home:

Tip one: Choose washable materials, drapes, couches, cushions, etc.
Microfiber. This is a great material for couches and chairs for your home. Microfiber is easy to clean, it tends to last a long time, and looks nice. It is not cheap looking, and a wet rag can lift most dirt, stains, etc. out of it. This is great because kids often have dirty hands, eat outside of the kitchen, and do things like color on the furniture. In addition, microfiber comes in a lot of colors, so you can make it fit your design choice, no matter what it is.
Leather. Leather is durable, super easy to clean, and fairly kid friendly. The danger with leather and children is scratches and holes. But, as long as your child is not using sharp objects while sitting on your leather furniture, it should be fine. The beauty of leather is that sticky fingers, spills from drinks, boogers that get wiped from nose to furniture, all wipe off easily. It is nearly impossible to stain, and it is going to last for a long time, making it a good value.
Zippable covers. These are couch cushion covers that can be taken off, and washed in your washing machine. If you are going to use something other than leather or microfiber, make sure it is easy to remove and clean.

Tip two: Create kid friendly spaces.
If you want a kid friendly home, you need some spaces that are dedicated just to kids. This can mean a toy room, or a media room that is kid friendly. If you make spaces that kids feel like they can play in, touch, and be in, they will leave some of the not so kid friendly spaces alone. They may not leave it alone completely, but enough to make your home a comfortable and happy place to be. If kids have a play room, they are less inclined to drag their toys into your formal dining room.

Tip three: Keep it safe.
Cover outlets, as a child's natural curiosity could lead them to doing things like sticking utensils, bobby pins, or money into outlets. This can be very dangerous, so put obstacles in their way by covering the outlets.
Keep cleaning supplies, etc. out of reach, as child have a natural tendency to explore these things, and can poison themselves in the process.
