Low maintenance gardening techniques

We all love gardens. I cannot think of a person who would not find a large, green, and vibrant garden absolutely amazing. The great gardens of the world are some of the most beautiful things in the universe. Unfortunately, not all of us love gardening itself. Even if you do like gardening you might not have the time to maintain a large garden in the way that you would like to. I love to get my hands into the soil or to watch a plant I have planted grow and become beautiful.

However, I rarely have time to do so. I also love to look at my garden. I like to take a chair out and sit in it and realize that it is something that I have created by myself. So if you are like me you need to find ways to garden that do not require a great deal of maintenance. We all know that starting a garden takes a great deal of effort, but if that same sort of effort needs to go into maintaining it then the whole thing becomes absurd. Read below about some great techniques for developing a garden that requires very little maintenance.

One of the things that most gardeners have to spend time doing is weeding. Weeding is the true bother of all gardners. If all you had to do was water and plant gardening would be a snap. However, those weeds are constantly invading your garden and threatening its beauty and health. You spend hours just getting rid of plants that you are paying to water. But how can you possibly get rid of weeds besides spending your Saturday pulling them up out of the ground? One answer is to grow some sort of ground cover or grass in your garden to cover a good portion of the open ground. Such plants will take over if they are well watered and they will cover the open space with a much more attractive plant than the weeds. Also, you can cover the ground with other materials, such as rocks or wood chips, which will help to retard weed growth.

The next suggestion will also help with weeding. Gardens that require a great deal of water can be very beautiful and lush, but they tend to require a great deal of time and resources. Watering the garden can take hours, and it can be difficult to get all of it covered. Consider developing a garden that is a bit more hardy and drought tolerant. Such gardens can be watered with things like drip irrigation systems. These systems have individual emitters that you can place next to each plant. They cut down on wasted water and because the whole garden area is not watered, as with a sprinkler, the weeds don't have nearly as much water to grow with.

One reason why gardens can take lots of time is that we like to plant certain high-maintenance plants in them. Plants that require a great deal of prunning or that need to be replanted every year. Annuals can be particularly time consuming because they need to be dug out and then replaced. Consider less time consuming plants. Your favorite rose is probably beautiful, but trimming the rose bush all the time takes a great deal of your time.

These and many other techniques can cut down on the total time required to maintain your garden. This means that you will have more time to spend on you family and hobbies and you will still have plenty of time to spend sitting in your beautiful garden.
