Maintaining your vegetable garden

You have already taken the steps and planted your vegetable garden, now you must maintain it. Maintaining your vegetable garden can take a lot of time and some work, but the result in the end is the worth it. You can take maintain a small garden taking about 15 minutes out of every day, for a larger garden it may take 30-60 minutes a day to keep it maintained. Here are some ideas and ways that you can use to maintain your garden.
Water your garden regular, but water it during the right time of day. Try to water your garden in the late evening or early morning. This will give the water to soak into the soil and not evaporate into the air. If the wind is blowing, you will still want to water, but try to do so when the wind has calmed down. Adding mulch to your vegetable garden will also help it retain water. Using mulch in your vegetable garden in hotter climates will help retain the water that plants need to survive during the hottest part of the days. There are different types of mulches that you can use depending on where you live. There are some fabric mulches that you can put down with metal pins and then put wood mulch of the top to help keep as much moisture in as possible.

Use fertilizer along with your mulch to help your plants growing and help them to stay strong. When using your fertilizers, be careful with them. You don't want to over fertilize causing some of your vegetables to die and you don't want to put fertilizer on during the heat of the day or right before the heat. Put them on right after you water or right before. The water will help the fertilizer to soak into your mulch and your soil helping your vegetable to grow strong. Do not use fertilizers that contain herbicides or pesticides, this will contain your vegetables and could make your sick.
Weed your vegetable garden as much as you can. No one likes to go out and pull weeds, but we need to do it to keep our vegetable gardens going. The faster and better you stay up on the weeds, the less you will have to go out and continue to pull them. While you are pulling weeds, you can also look for any insects that are in your vegetables. Keeping the insects away from your vegetable garden can be hard and frustrating, but is a must to keep you garden going. Keeping the weeds out of your garden will help the insects stay away. If you find yourself with insects in your garden, use the proper insect killer for your vegetables. You do not want to contaminate your vegetable and your health.
Keep an eye on your vegetable plants. Some of your fruits and vegetables may require you to add poles, rods or fences to have them attach to. For example, tomato plants require some type of fencing for the root and leaves to grab a hold of as they grow. The more your tomato plant grows the more tomatoes it is going to produce. Another example are your beans and peas, they may need a type of pole to climb up.
Weather can be very hard on your vegetable garden. Watch the weather to know what is going to happen day to day. If you are going to have a late frost, be sure to cover some of you plants up to protect them from the frost. If you are going to get wind and rain, do what you can to protect, but don't put yourself in harms way.
