When you think about your home and the space you have, many people forget to consider making patios a home extension and counting that as part of their square footage. A backyard done right is more than just a backyard and can literally be an extension of your living space. With patio furniture, lighting, and other critical elements you can transform an average patio into a true extension of your home. It can be a great place to unwind and relax after a hard day of work. With a little imagination and some sweat and work you can turn just about any type of patio into a home extension. Here are some ideas to consider when making patios a home extension.

No roof, now what?
If you have a patio that doesn't already have a roof on it don't feel too bad. That's how most patios are originally built. All this means is that you have to be creative in figuring out how to keep the windy and wet weather out and some warm are in. In order to maximize your patio you're going to either want to put a roof on it, or add a patio gazebo. Either way you go it's going to cost some money so it really more depends on preference. Patio gazebo's sit right on your patio and they are quite affordable depending on the size you want to get.

Patio Gazebo's
Because they come in different sizes you will have to choose how much of your patio space you want it to take up. Do you want it right smack in the center of your patio/ deck or do you want it off to the side a bit. Again, it is personal preference. Some people like to place it in the middle of the deck and then place furniture around it, and others like to have it off to the side. Make sure that you anchor your gazebo to the patio/ deck in case of bad weather. You don't want the thing blowing away or getting knocked over during a bad storm.

Adding a roof

If you choose not to go with the whole patio gazebo idea, there are several different ways you can add a roof to your patio. It will largely depend on what you're looking for. Here are some ideas for patio roofs:

  • Patio Umbrellas. These are generally made of wood and the umbrellas come in several different colors. They are relatively inexpensive and will give a natural and relaxed feel; resort like. Another great feature about patio umbrellas is that you can open and close them easily for more or less sun.

  • Metal patio roof. For those of you who enjoy sitting on their patios when the weather is hot and warm as well as rainy and cool you might want to consider getting a metal patio roof. Corrugated metal patio roof designs are sturdy and will usually last through the elements of nature. They are mostly permanent fixtures so once on it will be more difficult to remove, and they can be attached right to your home. This type of roof will give you maximum protection during the summer and winter months.

  • Clear glass patio roofs. These are great for letting the sun shine in while keeping your protected from the rain and other elements of nature. They are also a sturdy roof choice and are a creative way to add some character to your patio.

Making patios a home extension can be a fun and challenging project to take on. Make sure that whatever you choose to use for your patio extension you really love it, as it will truly become an extension of your already existing home.
