Making the most of a small space

Everyone has those small spaces in their house. It might be in the closet or in the garage but you still have them. Most people don't use them or just stuff them with things that they never use. Sometimes they may not seem like the best paces to put things but they actually can be very useful.

The first thing to do is to get rid of anything you never use. If you have a bag full of newborn baby clothes and aren't going to have any more children then donate it. Keep the sentimental items but things that you haven't used in 3 years just get rid of. Unless you know for certain that you will be using it soon, just throw it away or donate it if it's still good.

The tops of closets are a wonderful storage area. You can put things up there that you don't use very often, like extra blankets or winter clothes. The best things to put up there are things that you don't use every day but things that you use throughout the year. For example during the summer put winter clothes up there. You could even put shoes or shirts that you don't wear very often or that are only good for one sort of thing and you aren't doing that right now, like ballet.

If you have a small pantry in your home try to organize it the way you like it kept. Everyone has their own style when putting food away so you can still use your own but try using storage containers too. If you have a huge bag of rice buy a container, the ones that can be used for cereal work great, and fill it up with the rice. Write any instructions on an index card and tape the card to the container. Put the container in its spot in the pantry and the put the bag of rice in an area that is harder to reach. That way you can still get to the rice when you want it but you have an area that is for the "extra" food. It's annoying to have to get a huge bag of rice out every time you want to make rice so try this and see how it works for you. It uses up that out of the way spot in a great way.

The area under your bathroom sink can be really annoying too. Try using the same sort of idea that you used in your pantry. Have containers or areas for a few rolls of toilet paper, cleaning supplies, and any other items you keep there. If you use containers it can allow you to stack the items so you can maximize the space and put even more down there. Don't make it too crowded or you won't be able to get anything from down there when you need it or you will have to take everything out just to get something.

The areas in your garage that are small and don't have much purpose actually can be useful. If the area is big enough get some sort of shelf or closet. Using one will help make the area look clean and well kept. Use storage containers again for things like bottles of things for the garden, bottles of things for the cars, and bottles of things for the house.

By using storage containers you can make a small space a valuable space. Smaller spaces don't have to be empty or crowded with things but they can be a spot where you put things that you don't use all the time but are easily accessible.
