Making your living space more functional

livingroom7797733.jpgMaking a living space more functional is a great way to utilize the space a person has in a smaller apartment or home and it can also be a great way to make a house a better place to live no matter what the size of home. This article discusses several different options that a person can use to help make their living space more functional.

Organizing and storage tools

One of the best ways for a person to make their living space more functional is to use organizing tools in their closets and drawers. There are many different types of shelves and hangers that lay flat against a wall when not in use, but can pop out if a person needs to hang up clothes, belts, and other accessories.

There are many footstools and end tables available these days that can double as storage space. A person can keep board games, blankets, remote controls, etc. inside these decorative and functional pieces of furniture.

A person can also use decorative storage containers in their kitchen to both store food items as well as serve as decoration. A kitchen should not be cluttered with too many decorations. So using essential kitchen items as decoration will definitely make the kitchen a more functional space.

The garage is a great place for a person to use shelves, hooks, and other types of organizational and storage tools. People can banish many items to the garage to help de-clutter their living space inside their home and use the storage in the garage to house the items.

Beds

There are a couple of different options for a person to make their living space more functional when it comes to beds. A person can have a foldaway bed that turns into a sofa. This can be a great option for a guest bedroom especially if a person does not have the space for an extra bedroom.

Murphy beds-beds that fold up into the wall-are also a great choice for a person looking to make their living space more functional. These beds are just about as comfortable as any regular bed, but can be hidden until they are needed. And they do not take up any extra space when they are folded up into the wall.

Vertical space

While many people quickly use up the horizontal space in their house, many times vertical space is left vacant. A person can make their living space more functional by using the vertical space in their house. Shelves, bookcases, hanging hooks, and cabinets are all great ways for a person to use the vertical space.

Keep paths clear

To make a living space more functional, it is important that a person keeps the walking paths of the house clear. This can easily be done by creating an efficient layout of the house. There are certain paths that people use when walking through their living space and these should be kept clear of furniture and clutter.

Two rooms in one

Another way that a person can make their living space more functional is by using one room for two purposes. For example, if a person does not have the space for an office, they can put a desk in their living room or their bedroom. They can decoratively block this area off by using a room separator, a shelf, plants, or just the desk itself, to create a study or office area.

More than one purpose

Using furniture for more than one purpose is also a great way for a person to make their living space more functional. Ottomans could double as end tables or a person could use shelves as end tables and also benefit from the storage space.
