That is a good question. Mulching is a layer of a material that can be made of any one of these different things; straw, sawdust, plastic film, or pine bark. Spreading mulch on soil protects the plants and soil from soil crusting, rain, freezing and even evaporation. The mulch can be artificial, or organic material.

So now we know what mulch is, we can look at how using it will create happier and healthier flowerbeds. Lets look at how you use mulch first. That will help with this explanation.

Start by knowing where you want to place the mulch. The basic flowerbeds are a great place for this. You can put the mulch in other places of vegetation. However, we are working on your flowerbeds for now.

Then you will need to choose the type of mulch you want to use. It really depends on what you want to use, and what you want the flowerbeds look to be when you are finished. Many people like the pine bark look. However, this is really up to you.

After you know where you want the mulch to be placed, and what you want the mulch to look like, you are ready to place it. Lay the mulch out on your flowerbeds in late spring. This way you are avoiding the frosts. You will not want to stop the soil from warming enough for your flowers.

In order to apply the mulch so that it is healthiest for your flowerbed. You should be evenly spreading about 1 to 3 inches of mulch. This will depend on the size and sturdiness of the flowers. 3 inches of mulch is good for the larger flower plants. However, if there are many smaller plants, you will likely want to go thinner on the mulch.

How you apply mulch in the spring is different than in the fall. In the spring the mulch can be placed right up to the flower plant, but do not cover the actually base. This way the mulch is not stopping the plan from growing. Also, it is important to make sure the mulch is not going to be pushing the plant over.

Remember, for healthier plants, the mulch you use, needs to be replaced yearly. Also, do not confuse the way you are applying mulch in the spring with the way you apply it in the fall. In the spring, it is laid out in a fashion that allows the plants to grow. In the fall, the mulch is laid out to cover the plants so they do not freeze as much through the winter.
