Organizing a garage
Garages are wonderful places and are very convenient for keeping cars safe from the elements. But they can also be good for other things too. Storage is a great reason to have a garage but sometimes it can be difficult to find a lot of room to store things. But careful planning and preparation are needed to make a garage a good place to keep storage and cars at the same time.

As you plan what you will have in storage in your garage you need to keep many different things in mind. One of the first things that should be considered is what exactly will be stored in the garage. While the garage is a great place to store a lot of things, it isn't necessarily the best place for everything. Some things are better suited to a basement or other storage room in the home. The garage should be a place to store things that can handle extreme temperature fluctuations. Unless you want to rotate what will be in your garage during the different seasons, you should put only things that can withstand extreme heat or cold. A garage is about as close to being outside as you can be without actually going outside.
A great way to keep the garage organized is by the type of items you are keeping there or for whom they are being stored. For example, it doesn't' make sense to have your garden rake on one side of the garage and your shovel on the other end. Group similar items together so that you will be able to access all the tools you need for a particular job at the same time. This will make it easier to store things and easier to access them when you actually have work to do. Keep all of your wood working tools in the same area so you can easily access them when necessary.
Another thing that you need to keep in mind when you are planning your garage organization is that you need to have enough space left over to keep your cars in there too. This can sometimes be difficult especially when you have larger cars. You also need to be certain that you can open the doors and access anything in the vehicles while in the garage. Many people have a tendency to put too many things in the garage in general, especially things that should just be thrown out our sold. But if you have items that are not used commonly, you can put them up higher in the garage so that they don't influence the cars where they need to be.
Once you have all the things planned out that you need to have in the garage, you should take a trip to the store and buy the items that you need to get to work. Depending on what your budget is you may need to do things in segments instead of doing them all at once. Don't go crazy on spending for the most expensive types of storage. You don't necessarily need it to look great, but you should be sure and purchase sturdy materials so they can last as long as you need them to. Once you've made your purchases you will also need to plan a good amount of time to put everything in the proper place and to assemble or install all the things you have bought. Taking time to clean out the garage and to get rid of things that are broken beyond repair is a good idea as well. Take your time and make sure that you get everything really clean especially if you will be storing food or other perishable items in the garage.
