Painting like a pro

hole31931365.jpgPainting your home can be one of the best updates and can change the ambience more than almost anything else you do t your home. Painting is a relatively simple job, but should be done properly to make sure you get the most from the update and the time and money you spend on it. When you use the right tools and techniques, painting can be quite satisfying and provide a needed update in your home.

One of the reasons why people don't have a paint update go as planned is because they choose the wrong paint and the wrong finish. These are actually more important than many people think and they just shop for the cheapest price on paint rather than on the best product for the money. If you are painting indoors you really want to make sure that you are using an indoor paint. Mixing the types of paint or mistaking them for something different can really make a difference in the way the paint looks in the end. You should also choose the right finish for the paint and the room where it will be used. The different options are complicated and the most common type of finish is semi gloss. This can be used in most high traffic areas and is quite durable and resistant to washing which is very important in rooms like bathrooms or kitchens.

The right tools are also very important to consider when starting a painting job. You should plan on spending a little more money on the most important painting items so that your job will look much more professional in the end. Having a good paint brush, roller, and paint tray are the most important basic items that need to be used while painting. High quality products will make the effect more regular and more effective. It is worth spending a little extra money on the tools at the beginning to make sure that you get the best finish. This is also very important if you will ever plan on spending significant time on painting or doing more than one room.

Preparation is really the answer to making the most of your paint job. The preparation is the most tedious part of a paint job and so should have the most time spent on it. Not only will this make the actual painting easier and faster but will also make the cleanup of the paining much easier. You can even do things like putting lotion or baby oil on your hands before beginning the job so that the paint you will inevitably get on your hands will wash off much easier. You also want to have everything prepared that you need. Paint thinner is necessary to have on hand for oil based paints but latex paints, which are becoming more and more common, can wash off with soap and water.

You also need to protect the surface of things you don't want to get paint on. Having to stop painting and clean up a spill on carpet or on other surfaces can really make you lose a lot of time and can even cause the paint to dry enough to make it clump together. So it is better to spend the time and money on a good tarp or on old bed sheets so that you don't spill any paint where you don't' want it. When you actually begin your painting you should work in small areas so that you know you are getting proper coverage on all the different surfaces. It's also a good idea to prime any areas you will be painting before you start. Having a good coat of primer on before a coat of paint will make things go better and will also help require less paint in the process.
