Perennial versus annual flowers, which are best? You may be plagued with this big question when you begin planting any of your flower gardens. There are a wide variety of both annual flowers and perennial flowers to choose from in any nursery. To know which flower is best for you and your gardens is just a matter of personal preference and some trial and error on the flowers themselves.

Annual flowers are by definition flowers that are planted every year. Theses types of flowers include pansies, petunias, and forget-me-nots. Annuals are the most likely of flowers to give you blooms from the time you plant them until the colder months when they will die off. Annuals do cost somewhat less then their perennially counterparts but you will have to plant them every year.

A good reason to stick with annual flowers in your garden would be because you like change. Having annual flowers in your garden will allow you to change them every year. If you don't like a certain flower or where it grows you can change it all in the next year. Another good reason why someone would choose annual flowers over perennial flowers is because you don't have to do so much up keep on your annual flowers. Once they die you just need to remove the debris.

Annual flowers are also more forgiving of where they are planted. They can generally bloom anywhere. Annual flowers are good fro beginners. You can also plant them in new houses before you know how the sun cycles around your yard. Many annual flowers you find are great as borders or edgings in your gardens. Annual flowers also are good for containers in and around your home.

The definition of a perennial flower is a flower that is planted once. Perennial flowers will return every year. Some perennial flowers include Irises or Tulips. Perennial flowers have a shorter bloom time unlike annual flowers that bloom continuously from the time you plant them. Perennial flowers will bloom once either in spring, summer or fall. Perennial flower gardens need more planning so that the flower beds seem to be blooming through the spring, summer and fall. You need to find a good combination for planting these types of flowers.

Perennial flowers are more expensive then annual flowers but you only need to plant them once. The longer you have your perennial flowers the stronger they are and the more the perennial flower plant produces. You will need to thin your perennial flowers every couple of years. Either give them away to friends or replant them somewhere else in your yard that is a good match for that particular perennial flower.

Perennial flowers are picky about where they are planted. If they don't have the right sun or soil they will die on you no matter how hard you take care of them. Pay attention to the recommendations of these flowers. The more you know about the flower and where you are planting it the better off you will be. Do a lot of research before investing any money into your perennial flowers.

Perennial flowers are great for one time planting and then some simple maintenance in the fall and when they need some thinning. They look great all year round when carefully planted. Perennial flowers can add some great color the whole growing season to your yard.

To decide which type of flower, annual or perennial is best you need to know what you want. It may be easier just to buy flowers every year or just to plant flowers once. Both types of flowers have many good qualities and bad ones too. Some of the best gardens though will have a mixture of both perennial flowers and annual flowers.
