Preparing your outdoor furniture

statue31190090.jpgAfter a long winter in storage, you are ready to pull out your outdoor furniture for summer. Before you can use your outdoor furniture after getting it out of storage, you are going to need to clean your outdoor furniture and prepare it for use during the summer months.

Here are some cleaning tips based on the type of outdoor furniture that you have.

Plastic outdoor furniture:
To clean plastic outdoor furniture you will need to mix dish soap and warm water together in a bucket. Dunk a cloth or sponge into the bucket and wring out the excess water. Begin wiping down the furniture; you will need to rinse the sponge or cloth several times during the cleaning process. Once you have washed the furniture you will need to rinse off the soapy water, which can be done by turning on your hose and spraying off the furniture. If there are spots that won't come off you can use Mr. Clean Magic Eraser to remove them. If the furniture is scuffed or stained, you can repaint it using touch-up paint that is made for plastic.

Wicker outdoor furniture:
To clean this type of furniture you will need to use a mild oil-based soap, such as Murphy Oil Soap. You will need to mix the soap with some warm water inside of a bucket. Using a soft bristled brush you will need to gently scrub your furniture, the brush will need to be dipped in the bucket of soapy water numerous times. Once the furniture has been washed turn on your hose and rinse off the furniture. Throughout the summer, you should rinse off the furniture every few weeks or immediately after something has spilled on the furniture.

Wrought-Iron outdoor furniture:
To clean this style of furniture you will need to mix the dishwashing detergent and water together in a bucket and then use the cloth, making sure it is damp not dripping, and wipe down the furniture. If your furniture rusted over the winter, you can remove the rust by lightly sanding the area. Once you have sanded the rust off you need to clean it off with a damp towel and then repaint the area using touch-up paint.

Aluminum outdoor furniture:
To clean your aluminum furniture you will need to use a mild dishwashing soap and water mixed together, and then using a damp cloth wipe down the furniture. If you have scuffmarks you can use a damp cloth with a tiny amount of Soft Scrub, do not use abrasive cleaners or brushes because it will scratch the furniture. After cleaning the furniture, you will need to rinse it off with your hose. You will also need to protect the finish and the shine on your furniture, to do this simply apply baby oil to your furniture with a soft cloth every two to three months and let it air dry.

Wooden outdoor furniture:
If your wooden furniture has an exterior-grade varnish applied to it you can wash the furniture using soap and water, make sure that you thoroughly rinse off the furniture after washing it because the soap can soak into the wood. If your furniture does not have an exterior-grade varnish, you should apply it to your furniture, after washing it with a wash that is made for unprotected wood.

Fabric outdoor furniture:
This type of furniture is going to include hammocks and cloth covered chairs. If possible, wash the fabric covers in a washing machine on the gentle cycle and allow to air dry. To prevent the cloth from shrinking stretch it back over the frame before the fabric is completely dry.

Umbrellas:
Once you take the umbrella out of storage, you will want to wash the covers using a soft bristled brush and a bucket of cold water mixed with mild soap. You will need to oil the joints in the umbrella to help ensure free movement. If your umbrella has a wooden frame, you need to use paste wax to restore the shine.
