Reupholstering furniture
People reupholster furniture for a few different reasons. One of the main reasons that people reupholster old furniture rather than buying new furniture is because of how durable old furniture is. Most of the older furniture is made of sturdier construction, and is considered quality furniture compared to what you can find in stores today. Not to mention that buying used furniture is cheaper than buying new furniture because you can find some great deals on quality furniture at garage sales or even thrift stores.

Before you can reupholster your furniture, you are going to need to determine if the furniture is suitable for reupholstering. Here are some things to look for to determine if the furniture can be reupholstered or not.
- You need to be in love with the furniture that you want to reupholster because of the amount of work that is involved in reupholstering. If you do not like the shape of the furniture or you do not like how uncomfortable the furniture is, you should not waste your time in reupholstering it. Before you buy, any furniture to reupholster you should sit in it and determine if you like the style.
- Before buying the furniture or before reupholstering what you have at home you want to lift the piece of furniture to see how heavy it is. You do not want to waste time reupholstering lightweight furniture; you want to only reupholster the heavy furniture. The reason for this is that if the furniture is heavy the chances are good that the frame is made from quality materials, meaning hardwood. If the furniture is lightweight, it is most likely made from softwood, which is lower quality.
- When looking at furniture that you are going to reupholster you are not going to be able to determine the condition of the frame because it is going to be covered with fabric. If the frame is not in good shape, you do not want to reupholster the item because you will have to repair the frame before anything else can be done, and that can only happen if the frame can be repaired. If the frame cannot be repaired, you will have simply wasted your money on the piece of furniture. The best way to tell if the frame is in good condition is to give the furniture a good shake. By shaking the furniture, you will be able to determine if the furniture feels wobbly or if the legs feel loose. If anything moves that shouldn't, do not buy or reupholster the furniture.
- You will also want to feel the arms of the chair or couch that you are buying if they are covered with fabric. You want to squeeze the arms of the furniture to see what they feel like. Depending on how they feel, you might not want to buy the piece of furniture because you might not be able to salvage the arms. If the arms feel soft and squishy you do not want to buy the piece of furniture because that means the chair or couch was made from cheap materials, which have all but disintegrated. If the arm feels lumpy, it is okay to purchase the piece of furniture because that problem can be fixed. With lumpy arms all you have to do is replace some of the stuffing to make it is good as new.
- The last thing that you will want to do is to check the name of the company or person who manufactured the piece of furniture. If the name on the furniture is from a reputable company, you should go ahead and purchase it. If you have never heard of the manufacturer you will want to do some research on them before you buy anything.
