It is important to understand that most difficult decorating problems have a quick and easy solution. Whether you are just getting started (and feel like a novice) or you are an experienced home decorator looking for a solution to a problem here are some solutions to common decorating challenges-

  • Create a focal point in your room-If you feel that your room is bland and lacks interest then you need to create a focal point in your room. When you walk into a room (or any interior space) you will feel more comfortable if your eye can rest on a main feature. You can create that main feature, the "focal point," of the room whether the room has one built in or not.

  • Mixing patterns in decorating-Today's hot trend is to mix patterns within a room. It can be done even by non-professional but keep in mind not to use more then three patterns; they should have complimentary colors and be about the same size. Following these rules helps to avoid having a room that looks like a fabric store threw up in it.
  • Have the room reflect your style-Your home should be a place that showcases who you are. Trying to follow a cookie cutter approach to decorating will not really show what your personality is. You should work on adding an element of surprise and a touch of whimsy to make a perfectly decorated room even more interesting. This can be an unexpected touch of color, a one of kind accessory or a vintage piece of furniture mixed in with modern.
  • Know the importance of choosing the right fabric for the right job-While some fabric selections seem obvious (you would not use a sheer fabric for furniture upholstery or heavy velvet for cafĂ© curtains in a child's room) other choices are not always so clear cut. If you are unsure as to whether a particular fabric will work in a certain application make sure that you seek out the help of a qualified seamstress or decorator for recommendations.
  • Look for storage in unexpected places-One of the most common complaints by those redecorating a room is that they do not have enough storage. While obvious storage solutions abound (bookcases, shelves, TV. cabinets etc.) try to maximize your storage in unique ways. A coffee table with drawers or an ottoman that opens up will allow you to store lots of things out of sight. Think about furniture that has unexpected storage capabilities to make your room even more functional.
  • Think about what can be changed easily-If you are worried about committing to a particular decorating scheme because you like to change things up on a frequent basis then concentrate on items that can be changed easily. Curtains, lighting and other accessories can easily be changed out for a fresh new or seasonal look. Pillows, candles and other items are affordable can even be stored when not being used for the next time your urge to change the decorating strikes!
  • Never underestimate the power of paint! Paint is the decorating homeowner's best friend. Paint can lighten, darken or completely change the tone of any room without anything else even being changed. You can use to paint to add finishes, hide architectural defects and even provide art for your walls. Best of all there is very little that cannot actually be painted. Besides walls you can paint: lights, cabinets, counter tops and even the floor as long as you use the right kind of paint. For a smooth flow from room to room consider using the same colors of paint or similar colors that work well together.
