Remember you need to clean every part of your house. Start with baby steps. Do one room at a time. It will help to seem less overwhelming and you will feel great about finishing a room. Don't forget to do the garage or shed. They need to be cleaned out too.
For each room, start with what you see first. Look at countertops, tops of dressers, desks, bookshelves, or any other surfaces. Get rid of anything that isn't being used or you don't want anymore. If you don't want it thrown away, put it in a special box to keep as a memory. You don't have to throw away everything, keeping things like old pictures or artwork is a great way to remember when your kids were younger and what they did.
Next, look in every single drawer. Organize them and again get rid of anything that isn't being used. Keeping things organized will be a money saver and will make things so much easier. Desk drawers get messed around every time you shut them so they need to be organized at least each year. Sort through drawers in the kitchen too. Get rid of any old spatula's or appliances that you don't use. You can keep them in a box for when your old ones die, but if you have more than one, pack it away. Don't keep it in the kitchen. Put all old clothes in boxes or donate them. Don't keep clothes that don't fit or that you don't wear in your drawers.
Next, go through all other cabinets, underneath furniture, and closets. Get rid of anything that doesn't fit, is too small, or that you don't use. If you want to keep it, just pack it in a box.
Clean everything. Vacuum under everything including beds, and dressers. Wipe down everything too. Wash bedspreads, and things that aren't being cleaned on a regular basis. Dust like crazy. Whatever you see, clean. Everything gets dirty and needs to be cleaned. Remember, you don't have to do everything in a day or even a couple Saturdays. But do it everyday until it's done. Do one room a day if you want. That way you have time for you normal activities while you are still getting everything else organized.
Don't forget to label your boxes and keep similar ones together. It will help to keep things organized and easy to find when you need them. Boxes are great for clothes that are out of season, winter clothes, baby clothes, or things that you just simply aren't using on at least a monthly basis.
Remember, the more often you clean out things, the easier it will be each year. Garages and storage rooms are often the worst places for gathering things that aren't needed. But that doesn't mean that the other areas aren't important. Clean each year. You will find things that you can use or give away, freeing up more space for you to keep things organized or saving you money because you realize that you already have what you needed.
