The winter is over and you face the dreaded task of scrubbing walls, floors, carpets, and cleaning out the old junk from your garage. While spring cleaning may sound like one of the biggest undertakings you will do, it can be done with a schedule and dedication to living in a healthier environment. Here are some tips to help you spring clean your home:

Tip # 1 - Make a list

One of the best ways to figure out what you need to do is to make a list of all the things that need to be done. Walk through every room and write down what you need do. Things like waxing the floors, washing the walls, and sterilizing the bathrooms must be on your list. Pay attention to detail like that little ring that is starting to form in the bath tub or nail polish stain on the carpet. Pick out everything that needs attention and then create an action plan when you are going to get cleaning.

Tip # 2 - Get Ready

When you start cleaning, you need to make sure you have all the necessary supplies to properly do your job. If you only have Windex, you won't get too far with the toilets and the rest of the home. After you walk through and make a list of everything that needs cleaning, make a list of all the supplies you need to clean each room. Purchase two of each since spring cleaning tends to take up more supplies from traditional cleaning.

Tip # 3 - Take Action

The time has come to spring clean your home. Make sure everyone in your family has an assignment. Give the younger kids easy jobs like picking up all the toys and pitting them into their toy chests and storage bins. They can also help with cleaning out the old grocery sacks, catalogs, and random pieces of paper that you are saving for no reason.

Start with the kitchen since it tends to be the gathering place for a lot of clutter. Hit up the fridge and start throwing away all the expired foods. Don't forget to clean out the freezer as well. Get some disinfectant spray and clean off each shelf. Once the fridge and freezer has been cleaned, organize the way you place all the foods back in there.

Quite often we have 2 of the same things because the fridge wasn't organized so we didn't know what was in there.

A good way to spring clean is to do it on your day off. Usually Saturday tends to be the best day for spring cleaning since everyone has the day off and they can all devote a few hours to making the home nice again. Some of things you need to do include the following:

  • Vacuum. Make sure you really vacuum, not just the carpets but the walls too. Use the attachments to suck up any of the cobwebs on the ceiling and vacuum the drapes to get all of the dust out of them.
  • Dust. When you go around the home and dust, get everything like the light fixtures to the tops of door frames and picture frames. Dust mites can cause allergies for a lot of people and it can impact the air you breathe.
  • Flip your mattress and pound it out a little to get some of the dist mites out. Then spray it with some fabric Lysol to kill any bacteria and germs that may be trapped inside.
  • Wipe off your couches and chairs. Use Lysol on these places as well as it will help to kill any bacteria that is stuck in the fabric.
