For some people decorating can just seem overwhelming and not a whole lot of fun. Too often the problem lies in the fact that if you are not experienced in decorating you may not even know where to start. Coupled with your lack of knowledge can be the fact that a trip to the local home improvement store with its huge aisles and numerous choices can only make things worse. You may even be worried that if you do take on some decorating or home renovation you may just be left worse off then when you started. The key to avoiding this type of problem is to acquaint yourself with the basics of decorating. Understanding some key points of decorating (remember you do not have to be an expert) can help you to decorate smartly and avoid showing up on one of those homeowner renovation gone wrong television shows. Here are some strategies for decorating smartly-

  • Start with the paint-Paint is the easiest and least expensive way to change the mood and style of any room. A soft watery blue, for example, sets a calming tone, even in a busy room. You should avoid jarring colors that you may quickly tire of and ones that are gender- or age-specific. This is especially true if you decorating for children (remember children grow quickly). Failure to do this means that you will have to repaint prematurely, which means moving your furnishings into temporary quarters and then reorganizing the room all over again. In addition paint can help you stylize your room with faux finishes, add light and even help hide architectural blemishes.
  • Furnish wisely-Whether you are looking for a whole room full of furniture or just a few new pieces to spruce up a room you should get in the habit of looking. Furniture shopping most often means repeated trips to determine what you like and what you really want for your room. If you would like your own look be sure not to bypass consignment and thrift stores (the pieces may need some work) where you may be able to find affordable one of a kind pieces. Keep your eye peeled for garage and estate sales or anywhere else that someone might be getting rid of something that would fit into your room. You should also look for pieces that have some sort of functionality. A bench or a coffee table with drawers can be a wise investment as well as ottomans that offer storage within. This way you can furnish your room and increase your storage capacity at the same time.
  • Present a united look-You can use leftovers from your decorating projects to embellish storage boxes and bins. This will give your room a very coordinated look. Wallpaper, fabric scraps, and unused paint can all be used to dress up storage boxes or wicker baskets. Look through your home for objects that you can present in a different way that will add style and flair to your newly decorated room. Art that means something to you should also be a priority. Prints and photographs can be affordable and framed and displayed in your newly decorated room.
  • Forget about the trends-Too often people get caught up in following the latest decorating trends whether they like them or not! It is important to realize that this is your home and it should be a reflection of how you choose to live. Before making any serious decorating decisions take a moment and observe how you live in the room you want to decorate. For example if you live in an informal way in your living room changing it to something more formal will not be practical to your family. The bottom line is that your home should be a reflection of the people who live there.
