Hummingbirds are attracted to two main colors. They love red and orange in a garden. This can be your flowers or your ornaments, but those are the colors they flock to the most. That doesn't mean that they won't come to any other color, but that is just their preference.
Plant your garden at different levels. This means have a trellis with vines growing up, shrubs of all heights, and an array of flowers. This gives variety to the humming birds and they can come for any taste.
Honeysuckle is a great way to get hummingbirds. They love honey suckle in shrubbery and climbing. Keep in mind that their favorite are tubular flowers. This can help you pick out your flowers.
They also love citrus trees and mimosa trees. They can attract many different species of hummingbirds to your garden area.
Hummingbirds eat bugs and spiders, and they love nectar. If you don't have the right flowers, or you just want to see them right outside the window, a feeder is a great way to attract hummingbirds.
Feeders should be hummingbird's favorite color, red. This will give you the best results with attraction. You can have a red feeder or if you have a clear feeder then color the food red.
You should fill the feeders with sugar water, but too much sugar can kill hummingbirds. Make sure that your mixture is never more than one part sugar to four parts water. This will ensure you aren't doing more harm then good.
The right way to make sugar water is to make a mixture that is one and one parts sugar and water. Bring this to a boil to dissolve the sugar and protect it from molding. Then add three more parts cold water to the mix.
Once you have had many hummingbird visits, and they know where to find your feeder, you need to bring the sugar water down to one part sugar to six parts water. This is even healthier for the birds. You will make the mix the same, just adding extra cold water.
If you make more than you need to fill the feeder just refrigerate the extra until you need it outside.
Make sure that you are cleaning the feeder regularly. To keep harmful mold and mildew away wash the feeder every two or three days with very hot water and give it a good scrub. Sugar water should never stay in a feeder more than three days, this will ensure that it doesn't have time to go bad and make birds sick.
In the process of attracting hummingbirds you will find that you are attracting many more birds. Other nectar eating birds will eat out of your feeder and you flowers and shrubs will bring in a variety of beautiful birds.
It is fun to watch the birds come in, especially with children. They will love to see the different colors and sizes of the birds. It might be fun to buy a bird book and watch to see how many different birds you can spot. And you will be surprised how many different kinds of hummingbirds you will find in your own yard!
