Tips for cleaning dust off baseboards

Baseboards can be difficult to clean. Many people overlook the accumulation of dust on baseboards and others simply put off having to crawl on their hands and knees to clean. The truth of the matter is that the longer a baseboard goes between cleaning, the more dust there will be to clean off. Over time, even dust particles can become stuck to your baseboards and the work of scraping them clean again is a real deterrent.

Cleaning off baseboards should start with the easiest step first. Take a vacuum and using the extension hose, vacuum as much dust off of the baseboard itself and where the baseboard meets the carpet. Some insist that using the brush accessory in the vacuum collects more dirt while others believe that the standard extension hose works best. Try both methods to see which one yields the best results for you.

When you have finished vacuuming, use a clean rag dipped in water to wipe the baseboards clean. If water is unsuccessful at removing the dust that has accumulated on the baseboards you may have to use some sort of cleaning solution. Start with soapy water. If that doesn't work, try one of the home remedies that are listed below. Make sure that you continue your baseboard cleaning all around the room.

As most people have baseboards that need to be cleaned regularly, there are some common and not-so-common cleaning solutions that you can try. Listed below are some clever home remedies for a dirty or dusty baseboard:

Once you have cleaned the baseboards, wipe the baseboards again with a used fabric softener sheet. The fabric softener sheet will create a mild static charge that will actually help to prevent dust from settling on the clean baseboard again.

Friction is the force involved when dust and debris find their way to your baseboards. Once you give your baseboards a good cleaning, another way to prevent having to clean them again in the near future is to go back over a clean baseboard with some auto wax (turtle wax). Wiping clean baseboards with wax will decrease the surface tension on the baseboards and make it harder for the dust to hold on. You won't have as much buildup on your baseboards and the dust that does settle can be easily cleaned with a vacuum extension hose.

To make a simple homemade baseboard cleaner all you need is vinegar and water. Add 1 cup of white vinegar to 5 cups of hot water. Mix the solution together and use a rag or sponge to wipe down the baseboard.

Few people enjoy the process of cleaning baseboards but most people appreciate having a clean home. Although it may take some time to clean your baseboards the right way, having clean baseboards can make a big difference in the appearance of your home. Plus, if you can really get in and do the baseboard cleaning job right, you will not have to use as much elbow grease in the future as a little regular maintenance is all that you need to keep those baseboards looking as good as new. Here are some more good tips to remember while cleaning baseboards.

Make sure that you do not over saturate the area of the baseboard that you are working on. If your cleaning solution drips onto the carpet it may cause discoloration. Make sure that you wring out the rag or sponge that you are using so that it is just damp enough to loosen the dust without dripping.
It is always a good idea to use gloves when you are handling a cleaning solution (especially if you think you may have an allergic reaction). Also make sure that you exercise caution when around children as any kind of cleaning solution may be harmful if swallowed or inhaled.
The Mr. Clean Magic Eraser can work wonders at removing scuff marks and stains that your cleaning solutions may not be able to get rid of.
