Turn your backyard into a wildlife retreat by growing plants to lure native butterflies of Texas.

Most of the year from spring to fall, butterflies migrate in Texas. This is your chance to create a colorful and lively garden area to sit back and enjoy. Here are a few tips to create a Texas garden that will encourage butterflies to visit.

  1. You can decrease your lawn area by replacing it with native plants of Texas. Think about it, you no longer will need to mow, fertilize and water the lawn. Native plants can attract a large variety of wildlife species. Planting native plants can offer berries for birds and nectar for butterflies and hummingbirds. Moreover, you can enjoy beautiful and hardy native perennials in your Texas garden like Daisies. Native plants don't need additional water once they survive the first year of being planted. Once your garden takes off, you can experience the beauty of it with flowers blooming nearly all year and watching butterflies fly over it.
  2. Keep your yard healthy by attracting the right species of bugs like bees and butterflies. You can also have visits from interesting species of birds. Instead of buying insecticides to kill bad creeping hungry bugs, provide a small pond or birdbath to attract birds into your garden. They will enjoy feasting on insects in your yard.
  3. It's important to use few or no chemicals when choosing to create a wildlife atmosphere in your garden. Chemicals can disrupt the ecosystem in your garden and harm the wildlife surroundings including insects, bugs, plants and birds. You can buy organic food to improve the soil and plants and save lives of many creatures.
  4. Find the best sunny location and appropriate wildflowers to thrive in your garden. Avoid planting plants that can be invasive to damage wildlife plants. In the state of Texas some of those invasive plants like the water hyacinth and giant duckweed are prohibited.
  5. Enjoy your wildlife habitat that you have created. Take the time to walk around your garden or simply enjoy it from your kitchen door to your garden. Spend time enjoying watching birds and butterflies. Learn about the different species of birds that visit your yard. You can add or expand your wildlife flower garden. Moreover, this technique of gardening can actually save you money on your monthly water bill.
  6. Before planting, know how much sunlight and water your plants need and the best time to plant them. Prepare the soil and enrich it with organic matter. You can achieve wonderful organic matter from things you already use in your home or yard converted to compost.
  7. After your plants are planted, cover them with mulch to keep the ground moist and cool in the heat of the summer months and warmer in the cooler and rainy months. Mulching will save you work on weeding and watering.
  8. It is best to plant after a rain shower in the fall, winter or spring to guarantee a high rate of survival.
  9. Make sure you add stepping stones to allow you to maintain your garden as needed. You can go from one place to another without harming your plants by stepping on them.
  10. When planting, consider the needs of plants accordingly. Do not combine plants together that have unequal water or light source requirements.

Native plants of central Texas attract a large array of insect life; some which are fascinating. Butterflies are among the most attractive visitors. They will stay in your garden if you provide the right plants and environment deep in the heart of Texas.
