Tips for pruning your hedges

There are a lot of different things that you can do in your yard to make it better. One thing that can make or break a yard is the hedges. If the hedges are not pruned the house looks like a disaster and looks like it needs some TLC. But if the hedges are pruned the house looks nice and neat and like the personal that owns the house really cares about their yard. If you are thinking about planting hedges or have hedges but do not know how to prune them here are some tips for pruning your hedges that might help you.

The first tip is to make sure that you prune your hedge just enough. You do not want to prune your hedge too much or you will end up with just sticks and no leaves. This will endanger the health of the hedge which you do not want to do because it can cause your hedge to die. You will also want to make sure that if you decide what type of pruning you are going to do before you start. For example you can do a simple prune where you just trim back the excess growth or you can go a little bit further and shape the hedge. If you are shaping a hedge the best thing to do is to start when the hedge is small. But if you just moved into a house or have waited too long and the hedge is mature then it will be a lot harder to prune.

The second tip is to make sure that you only prune the hedge when needed. Depending on the hedge will depend on how often you have to prune it. For example you want to prune your hedge when there is about four inches of new growth. Some hedges have this much growth in a month while other have this much growth in a year. Not only does it matter on the type of hedge you have it also matter on what type of location you live in. Different hedges will react differently in different environments.

The third tip is if you decide to shape your hedge that you make sure that you keep the base wider then the top. The reason for doing this is to help prevent damage that snow or ice may cause. Depending on what type of hedge you have will also depend on what you do at the end of the year. For example some hedges you trim way back while others should be cut all the way to the ground in late winter. This is a good thing because it also helps you to be able to reshape the hedge if you have messed up the year before.

The fourth tip is to make sure that you always always have in mind what you want your hedge to look like. If you do not know what you want your hedge to look like and just grab your clippers and start going at it you will probably end up with a nightmare instead of a good looking hedge. You will also want to make sure that you trim little areas at a time. This way you will not get overwhelmed with the whole project because you can take it a little at a time. If you come to a branch that you are not sure of leave it for the next day when you start on another section. This will give you time to think about what will look best.

These are just some of the tips for pruning your hedges. There are a lot of other tips out there that can help you achieve the look you are going for when it comes to your hedges. It all depends on what you are looking for as to what tips you will want to take.
