Tips for storing artwork or photographs long term

Most of you probably have some type of artwork or photographs lying around your house that you are no longer needing, but the problem is that you do not want to give these items away. Well the only thing that you can do instead of giving the items away is to prepare the items for long term storage, which can create a problem in itself. Not very many people know how to store photographs or artwork for long term, which means that they end up trying to store the items long term and when they go to retrieve them they find that they are damaged beyond repair. The good news is that if you follow some simple tips and suggestions you can successfully store your artwork or photographs long term and not have to worry about them getting damaged from improper storage.

Here are some tips for storing artwork or photographs for long term.

Tip one:
One thing that you should avoid when storing photographs or artwork long term is storing them in the wrong places. You should avoid storing photographs or artwork in basements, attics or along the outside walls of any kind of building. The reason for this is that these areas are more prone to experience extreme temperatures and fluctuations in the environment than other areas.

Tip two:
Another thing that you are going to want to avoid when storing photographs or artwork for long term is to store them where they are not going to be exposed to high temperatures and humidity. The reason for this is that the temperatures and humidity can cause the photographs or artwork to deteriorate and they can also help to promote the growth of mold and mildew which can mar the surfaces and break down binder layers.

Tip three:
What you do want to do when it comes to storing photographs or artwork for long term is that you are going to want to store them in a cool, dry, and well ventilated place. You can choose to use a storage shed, but you are going to want to make sure that they offer climate control rooms and that you are not using an outside room. The best place to store photographs or artwork is on the main floor of your house in a closet that is in a bedroom.

Tip four:
Another thing that you want to avoid is storing any kind of photograph or artwork in an area that is exposed to direct sunlight. The reason for this is that the sunlight will cause the photographs or artwork to fade over a period of time, which means that they will lose color.

Tip five:
Another thing that you want to think about is what you are storing the photographs or artwork in. You are not going to want to store photographs in magnetic or self adhesive albums, especially if you plan on storing them in albums, nor are you going to want to store them with acid types of paper. But you should plan on putting in some kind of special paper to help absorb any of the acid that is in the storing environment, which is called buffering paper.

Just keep in mind that there are many other things that you can do to help store your photographs and artwork for long term. But you also want to keep in mind that just because a product is sold at a photography or art store doesn't mean it is going to be safe to use for long term storage. What you want to look for is archival products that are made from polypropylene rather than PVC plastics.
