Tips for the seasonal household cleaning

Seasonal household cleaning doesn't just have to be spring cleaning. You can also do seasonal cleaning in the fall or pre-holiday. Seasonal cleaning is basically a deep clean from top to bottom throughout the house. Seasonal cleaning should include moving all furniture to clean under and around it, cleaning all your smaller knick knacks or collectibles, ceiling fans, washing walls and perhaps shampooing the carpets. Seasonal cleaning should also leave the whole house sparkling like new. Every nook and cranny of your home should look brand new.

You can do your seasonal cleaning any time of the year but it is most popularly done during the spring to air out your house after a long cold winter. No matter when you do the cleaning it is a long and tedious job. The easiest way to do this is to schedule a day or two to do the cleaning and break down the jobs into rooms or by chore.

Put all your cleaning supplies into a tote to carry around with you. Then you are not running back and forth getting what you need. Supplies you should have include window cleaners for multiple surfaces including bathroom and kitchen cleaners, dust cloths, buckets for extra water or mixed cleaners, sponges, and mops or brooms. Every household requires different supplies so find what you need and get it all organized for the cleaning.

For every room no matter what it is used for you need to move left to right and top to bottom. This helps you know where you've been and where you need to go. Make a list of your rooms and what needs done in each room, check it off as you go. While cleaning avoid any distractions, this is an easy task to ignore. Keep things organized as you move along so you don't spend time putting everything back in its place later. Get rid of clutter as needed.

The chores for the rooms include:

Dust cobwebs and dirt from corners.
Clean windows including the windowsills and the screens if weather allows.
 Thoroughly clean blinds.
Take down draperies and wash or dry clean.
 Clean baseboards.
Clean door trims, window trims, and tops of windows.
 Clean door knobs and doors.
 Wash inside door frames.
Dust shelves, knick knacks, picture frames, or anything else on the walls.
Organize the shelves. Clean out drawers.
 Polish wood furniture.
Wipe cabinet doors in bathrooms and kitchen.
 Dust and clean ceiling fans.
Take down and wash light fixtures. Bugs get inside and leave a mess.
Vacuum cloth upholsteries and in between cushions.
Move furniture to clean underneath including appliances. Get help if needed.
Vacuum or mop all floors. Pay attention to edges under cabinets and baseboards. You can use baking soda sprinkled on carpets for about an hour before vacuuming to get rid of the musty smell.
Wax any floor that may need it.
 Clean doormats.
Clean refrigerator inside and out. Throw out old or frost bitten food.
Vacuum the coils of your unplugged refrigerator.
Spray your oven to let the cleaner soak or start your self cleaning oven. Keep a window open if you can for the smell.
Clean the smaller kitchen appliances also.
Remember the microwave inside and out. Boil a cup of water in the microwave for easier cleaning.
Change shelf liners if you use them.
Place cedar blocks in closets to prevent moths if desired.
Wash all bedding and vacuum pillows and mattress.
Empty and wash out trash cans.
Wash out toilet bowl. Don't forget behind the bowl on the floor.

In the fall you will want to do some seasonal also.
Wash and store seasonal items like patio furniture and summer items
 Store garden hoses after draining.
Touch up peeling paint on decks and trims or other wood surfaces.
Check windows for leaks and caulk where needed.
Make sure doors have a god seal when closed. Use weather stripping if necessary.
 Wash exterior of windows.

Seasonal cleaning is a deep clean meant to help your home keeps its sparkle. It's best to do these all together while you are focused. Going room by room with a checklist makes this daunting task easier to handle.
