Tips on gardening in small spaces

carrots15619446.jpgJust because you have limited space doesn't mean that you can't have a great garden. Even if you only have access to a deck, patio or a porch you can still enjoy a beautiful garden during the spring, summer, and fall months. All it is going to take is a little planning and a creative mind.

Here are some tips to keep in mind to make a wonderful garden in a small space.

Tip one:

Add a sculpture. You don't have to buy a huge sculpture because if it is too big it will take away from your space and make your garden look cluttered. What you want to do is purchase a small stone or bronze sculpture and makes it the highlight of your garden area. To make the sculpture stand out you will need to buy a few small plants that you can put around the statue to make it stand out.

Tip two:
Buy only the necessary tools. When gardening in a small space you do not need to have full sized versions of the gardening tools. All you need to do is pick up the needed hand tools for the gardening project. The biggest tool you will need is a rototiller so you can turn the earth in your garden, but this can be rented from a home improvement store. Otherwise, all you need is a small hand shovel and rake. You will also need potting mix and organic fertilizer to mix to help your plants grow.

Tip three:
Use a variety of containers in your gardening space. You can use containers of all sizes, you can also use containers that are different colors or made out of different mediums, such as wood or glass. When you arrange the containers make sure you place them so that they are appealing to the eye. When buying containers the one thing you need to ensure is that, they all have good drainage.

Tip four:
You can use a trellis in your small garden space. Trellises are great because they do not take up much space because they go up instead of out. You can string a variety of plants along your trellis, including grapes or cherry tomatoes. Using a trellis is a great way to maximize your gardening space.

Tip five:
Use window boxes to help maximize your gardening space. This is great if you have deck or a porch because you can place window boxes along the railings to make the most out of the limited space that you have. A large variety of plants can be put into window boxes and they can all be used to increase the appeal of your garden area.

Tip six:
If you do not want to plant flowers or vegetables, you can try planting herbs instead. Herb gardens are great for small spaces because you can plant a variety of herbs in one container or you can group containers together to plant a bigger herb garden. You can place small planters that contain assorted herbs as a centerpiece for your patio table or you can create a border along your gardening area with herbs that are in containers. Herbs also serve another purpose, in addition to decorating your garden area you can use them in your cooking or for aromatherapy.

Tip seven:
If you do not have much space along the ground or railings to place window boxes you can use hanging baskets. With hanging baskets all you have to do is place hang them from the roof of your porch or an overhang and you have more space to plant things.
