Tower gardening

gardening27363784.jpgTower gardening is a great way to grow some of your fruits and vegetables, such as peas and strawberries, in a limited space. Rather than growing out you build a tower and plant your vegetables inside the tower. The tower will only take up as much space as it is in diameter, which means you can plant more vegetables or fruits next to one another. Tower gardening is also a great way to maximize your crop yield because you can get more crops in a limited space.

Here are the steps you will need to follow to use tower gardening.

Step one:
Go to your local hardware store and purchase a piece of PVC pipe. You want to buy a piece of PVC pipe that is 12 inches in diameter, but it can be anywhere from four feet long to six feet long, how long you want it depends on how much you plan to plant in the pipe and how tall you are.

Step two:
Holes will need to be cut in the pipe before you can use it for tower gardening. You can ask the salesperson at the store to have somebody cut holes in the pipe for you or you can take it home and do it yourself. The holes will need to be about three inches in diameter, and you want them to be in three rows of four holes each.

Step three:
Choose a sunny area of your garden to place the pipe in. You will want to stand the PVC pipe up onto its end and place it in the spot you selected. If the pipe is not able to hold steady on its own, you will need to drive a stake down into the pipe to help keep it steady.

Step four:
You will need to get some horse manure for your pipe, which can be bought from a local horse farm or from a garden supply center. If you use a local horse farm, make sure the manure is free of chemicals, meaning you do not want any manure from horses that have been recently medicated because those chemicals will end up inside your garden. Load the PVC pipe full of the horse manure.

Step five:
After you have filled the pipe with horse manure, you will need to place straw or hay at the top of the pipe to prevent weeds from emerging through the horse manure.

Step six:
You will need to buy small vegetable or fruit plants from your local gardening store; you can also use seeds and grow them inside your house until they are about three inches in height. Place one or two plants inside each hole in the PVC pipe. With plants such as strawberries, you can plant two plants per hole because strawberries don't mind being overcrowded, even with overcrowding they will still grow vigorously.

Step seven:

Make sure that when you plant each plant in the hole that you plant it deep enough so that they are in far enough so that the top-heavy growth does not cause them to pull out of the ground, which will become a problem as the plant grows larger.

Step eight:

In the top of the PVC pipe, you are going to want to plant four or five plants. Make sure you get the plants deep enough in, under the straw or hay that is placed in the top of the pipe to prevent the plants from pulling out, as they get too heavy.

Step nine:
After 2 to 3 weeks, your plants will be cascading down the sides of the pipe and covering the entire pipe. When it is time to harvest all you have to do is take a basket out there and pick the fruits or vegetables.
