- Create a space that will be long-lasting-Your goal should be to create an outdoor space that doesn't require a lot of updating. If you are unsure of how to do this head to a boutique garden centers, they are full of take-and-make design ideas. This means that rather than a row of pots and a row of plants, they create vignettes to show you color combinations that can be duplicated in just about any backyard.
- Focus on less care and more comfort-Gardeners have now begun to focus on the fact that they want a comfortable yard that requires less care. This applies to everything from the blooms to the outdoor eating area. Garden design experts advise thinking about creating outdoor spaces, in the same way you're creating indoor spaces. This means that you want to select outdoor furniture and accessories that will last a long time and allow their colors and textures to coordinate. Remember that you're selecting those things as a group just like you would a room inside your home. There are lots of bright new colors that complement the accessories you'll find at garden centers. Keep in mind that accessories are a great way to personalize your space and add that final finishing touch. Just remember that whatever you select you should make sure it can stand up to the elements.
- Bring the indoors out-A gardening trend that continues is the blurring of the lines between indoors and out. This means that many things you find that are meant for indoors are perfectly fine to use outdoors and vice versa. Outdoor furniture is getting a lot more exciting. You can find big showcase pieces like concrete lounge chairs and those that are made of recycled or sustainable materials. You can easily add dramatic interest with a contemporary twist on traditional furniture; now you can enjoy familiar shapes but in a selection of bright colors.
- Place the right plant, in the right location-To have an effective garden, not matter your what your style is, you need to choose the right plant, for a particular site. You should consider plants for their texture, foliage color, and general toughness (think native), then you can match the plant with the soil, water and light conditions it needs. Garden designers urge that while you can always get color from flowers, try to think out of the box, and add more interest to your garden with colorful foliage. Remember that foliage that goes beyond the usual greens, to solid silvers to variegated green-and-white, and it offers an opportunity to add additional contrast and texture, to your design scheme. And most importantly you don't need many plants to make a big impact, but you do need to shop wisely. Keep in mind that if you shop at a reputable nursery, they will carry plants that do well in your area. However, it always pays off to do research and learn about the shade or sun exposure, and soil type, of your various garden beds so you'll know the plants you buy, are going to do well in your garden.
- Think containers as art-Plant containers add interest and color, and best of all you can put almost anything in a container. They're portable, and they give you plenty of new planting opportunities. By adding containers on porches, patios or decks, you have then added another layer to the landscape. In addition, if you've got only a deck or a patio, and no in-ground planting space, containers are a great way to give yourself a place to garden.
