Choosing the right colors for your interior decorating project may be just the thing to brighten up not only a room, but also your mood. Color is a very interesting thing. The colors you prefer say something about your personality and way of life. Colors can affect your feelings as well as your emotional health. They can increase a feeling of happiness or decrease a feeling of despair. So when you're about to embark on a renovation of a room in your home, you want to be sure that you're choosing colors that will improve your quality of live. You also may be concerned with choosing colors that are in with the current trends. But what are the current trends in colors?

Before we being a discussion on current trends in colors, let's discuss what certain colors can symbolize. Bear in mind that different cultures and countries may approach color differently, but most westerners associate the following colors with these feelings:

Red: red is a very intense color and symbolizes anger, strength, passion, power and desire. It is emotionally packed and carries high visibility. It is not recommended as paint in your kitchen because it tends to inspire people to eat more.

Orange: orange combines the energy of red and the happiness of yellow. It is associated with enthusiasm, joy, creativity and stimulation. Orange is also affective at promoting food (meaning it may not be a good idea for the kitchen either).

Yellow: yellow is the color of sunshine, and is naturally associated with joy, happiness and energy. It is effective at attracting attention and highlighting elements in a design.

Green: green, the color of nature, symbolizes growth, harmony, freshness and fertility. It has great healing power and suggests stability and endurance. You may want to paint a room green to suggest a feeling of safety.

Blue: blue is peaceful color and symbolizes depth and stability. It symbolizes trust, loyalty, wisdom and intelligence. It slows human metabolism and produces a calming affect. It suppresses appetite, so it would be a good choice for a kitchen. Paint a room blue if you need a more tranquil environment.

Purple: purple combines the stability of blue with the energy of red. It is associated with royalty and symbolizes wisdom, creativity, passion and extravagance. Paint a room purple if you want a more feminine design, or if you are looking for a mix of passion and peace.

White: white is the color of cleanliness, and is associated with light, goodness, innocence and perfection. It means safety.

Brown: brown is natural and down-to-earth. It symbolizes wholesomeness, earthiness and dependability. It can stimulate the appetite.

Black: black is associated with power, formality, mystery and elegance. It can have a negative connotation, but also denotes strength and authority. Paint a room black if you are looking for a more aggressive color scheme.

The current trends in color are moving away from neutral tones and heading towards more bold colors. Bright colors like red, orange, and grass green are very popular among homeowners today. Purple is the big color of 2007 and is expected to appear in every available shade. Red and yellow have become the new "neutrals" and are being used in every imaginable way in almost any room. However, orange is expected to overtake red in 2007. The shades of orange are deepening and leaning towards almost brown and metallic tones. Think terra cotta shades.

Blue currently has the most diverse options open to it and can be found in any shade from sea blue to cobalt to turquoise. This reflects our desire to reach a point of relaxation and relieve stress. Green continues to be popular, but will be moving towards softer tones. Brown is being hailed as the "new black" and is shifting towards earthy tones.
